School Board Meeting Public Comment Rules

The School Board welcomes public input and values diverse viewpoints. Each person will be given a reasonable opportunity to be heard on any proposition before the Board takes official action, consistent with F.S. § 286.0114 and Board Policy 0169.1.

Speakers must complete the public-input form and will be recognized by the Chair in the order received. Each speaker is allotted three minutes unless the Board votes otherwise before public comment begins. Comments must be addressed to the Board as a body.

Speakers may express support, opposition, or criticism of Board policies, programs, or actions. Criticism of Board decisions or officials, so long as it is not a true threat, is protected speech. The Chair may pause or end a speaker’s time only if the speaker’s conduct materially disrupts the meeting.

True threats, obscene language, or conduct that violates F.S. § 877.13 are not permitted. “Obscene” refers to pornographic or patently offensive language or gestures, not mere criticism or harsh language directed at officials.

All participants will be treated respectfully and are expected to extend the same courtesy to others.
