ECG

ECG

To help ensure the safety and well-being of our students, Flagler Schools is requiring all high school students wanting to participate in athletics, JROTC, Marching Band, or Color Guard to complete a one-time electrocardiogram (ECG) prior to participation.

An ECG is a medical test that records the electrical activity of the heart over a period of time. The test results provide information about the heart's rhythm, the size and position of the heart chambers, and any potential abnormalities in the heart's electrical system.

Flagler Schools is excited to partner with AdventHealth and Who We Play For to offer free ECG screenings for our students.

FAQ's

  • ECGs provide information about the heart's rhythm, the size and position of the heart chambers, and any potential abnormalities in the heart's electrical system. Early detection of such abnormalities, or other cardiovascular issues can lead to timely intervention, appropriate medical guidance, and potentially life-saving measures.

  • In the fall of 2024, the Flagler County School board amended School Board Policy 406.1 to include antECG requirement for all high school students wanting to participate in athletics, JROTC, marching band, and color guard. This requirement takes effect on June 1, 2025.

  • No, students are only required to have one ECG on file during their high school career (must be on file prior to participating). Students can complete their ECG after May 1 of their 8th grade year.

  • Flagler Schools has partnered with AdventHealth and Who We Play For to provide free ECG screenings to our families beginning in the Spring of 2025.

  • High school students will be required to have a "Normal" ECG or written clearance from a Cardiologist prior to participating in any athletic, JROTC, marching band, or color guard activity.

Students enrolled in any of those classes during the school day will have 10 school days to submit a "Normal" ECG to the school or have a follow up visit with a Cardiologist scheduled.

Students not meeting this timeline may need to have their schedule adjusted and placed into an alternative course/program.

  • Families can submit their "Normal" ECG results or written clearance from a Cardiologist through the athleticclearance.com website. This is the same website that parents of student athletes use to submit their annual sports physicals.

  • Yes, any additional medical expenses necessary for a student to be cleared to participate would be the responsibility of the family.

  • Schools will work with our families and their physicians on creating a Medical Care Plan to help ensure their safety. Our school counselors and nurses will assist in that process.

  • Flagler Schools first priority is the safety and wellbeing of our students. If a family was seeking a religious exemption to receiving an ECG, we would work with that family to determine if there were other ways to collect the same information provided in an ECG.
