Certification

Flagler Schools is committed to meeting the educational needs of every student by hiring highly qualified teachers. We work with the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) to ensure compliance with state statutes and educational certification rules. The two types of educator certificates offered are the Professional Certificate and the Temporary Certificate. First-time teaching certification applicants should complete an application on FLDOE's Educator Certification page.

Professional Certificate

The Florida Professional Certificate is a renewable certificate that is valid for five school years (July 1–June 30) and must be renewed every five years. The Professional Certificate is issued to an applicant that meets the following requirements:

  • Completes a Florida state certification application
  • Holds a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited state institution, or the equivalent from a foreign institution, with a 2.5 GPA in the subject area of initial certification
  • Has passed all Florida state exams, including general knowledge, subject area exam, and professional education
  • Satisfies professional preparation (education courses)
  • Demonstrates professional education competence

For experienced teachers with a non-Florida certificate, a Professional Certificate can be obtained by documenting the following:

  • A valid standard out-of-state teaching certificate
  • Application for Florida certification in the subject(s) shown on the out-of-state certificate

Temporary CertificatE

The Temporary Certificate is a non-renewable certificate that is valid for three school years (July 1–June 30). An applicant’s eligibility will consist of the following requirements:

  • Completes a Florida state certification application
  • Holds an acceptable bachelor's or higher degree
  • Meets the subject area requirements by degree major or a 2.5 GPA in a course evaluation subject area or earns a passing score on the appropriate Florida subject area exam that is no more than ten years old except in the following areas:
    • Guidance and Counseling
    • Educational Leadership
    • Reading
    • School Psychologist
    • Speech-Language Impaired

Flagler Schools will submit fingerprints processed by FDLE and the FBI based upon employment in a Florida public or acceptable nonpublic school. Once a Temporary Certificate has been issued, the requirements for the professional certificate must be completed within three years.
