Exceptional Student Education

McKay, Gardiner, and HOPE Scholarship

The McKay Scholarship Program for Students with Disabilities provided over 28,000 Florida students with special needs the opportunity to attend a participating private school during the 2013-14 school year. The McKay Scholarships Program also offers parents public school choice. A parent of an eligible special needs student may choose to transfer the student to another public school.

Because your child has an IEP or 504 they may be eligible to participate in the McKay Scholarship Program. By participating in this program your child may be able to attend a different public school in your district, an adjacent district or a private school.

After a parent files intent to participate in the McKay program, a letter from Florida School Choice is sent to the parent that includes the student’s intent confirmation number and intent date. A brochure “Next Steps for Parents Filing for John M. McKay Scholarship” will also be enclosed. The brochure includes instructions for choosing a participating private school or requesting public school McKay options from the district.  English, Spanish and Creole forms can be found in our forms library under the about us tab or by clicking here

The Gardiner Scholarship
provides eligible students a scholarship that can be used to purchase approved services or products in order to design a customized educational program for that student. For further information Click here to reach the Florida Department of Education School Choice Office.

The Hope Scholarship was established to provide the parent of a public school student who was subjected to an eligible incident an opportunity to transfer the student to another public school in the district or to request a scholarship for the student to enroll in and attend an eligible school in another district/private school. Beginning with the 2018-19 School Year, contingent upon available funds, and on a first-come, first-served basis, a student enrolled in a Florida Public School in grades K-12 is eligible for a scholarship under this program if the student reported an eligible incident.
