The Florida Department of Education released the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA) scores for third grade English Language Arts today. Overall, all elementary schools in Flagler County either met or exceeded the state average. As a district, the Flagler County School District ranked tenth out of all districts in the state which is up from twenty-first last year.

“I am extremely proud of our third-grade students’ performance and the efforts of our faculty, staff, and administration,” says Flagler Schools Superintendent James Tager. “We could not have seen the gains we saw without the hard work of our entire community.” A few of the highlights in this year’s Third Grade ELA results are:

  • 68% of Flagler County third-graders performed at or above grade level (earning a level 3 or higher). This is ten points higher than the state average.
  • Flagler Schools is now ranked 10th among all districts in the state with third-graders performing at or above grade level. This is an eleven spot jump compared to last year.
  • Bunnell Elementary, Wadsworth Elementary, and Imagine School at Town Center showed the largest growth between last year and this year in the percentage of students who performed at or above grade level (earning a level 3 or higher).
  • Those same three schools in addition to Belle Terre Elementary increased the percentage of students performing above grade level (level 4 or higher).
  • Old Kings Elementary and Rymfire Elementary reduced the achievement gap between students with disabilities and students without (earning a level 3 or higher).
  • Rymfire Elementary also increased the percentage of students with disabilities who performed above grade level (level 4 or higher).

Finally, it is important to note that third graders this year are the first group to benefit from the district-wide VPK initiative started in the 2014-15 school year, in which all our elementary schools offer VPK during the school year. This means many of these students have been within Flagler County District Schools since they were four years old.
