Graduation 2020 Update

Graduation 2020 Update
Posted on 05/28/2020

There have been many spectacular finishes witnessed at Daytona International Speedway over the past 61 years. On Sunday, May 31st, nearly a thousand graduating seniors from Matanzas High School and Flagler-Palm Coast High school can add themselves to that list.

Thanks to the generosity of the France family, NASCAR, and Daytona International Speedway and track President Chip Wile, these two Flagler County Schools will hold their graduation ceremonies inside the World Center of Racing.

While graduates and their families will remain in their vehicles for the ceremony, there will still be the normal sights and sounds of traditional graduations. There will be a few songs and speeches before students will be handed their diplomas.

That’s where it gets interesting.

Each student will drive across the checkered start/finish line where they will be handed their diploma. The new graduate will complete a “victory lap.” Once all the diplomas are handed out and tassels are turned, students will be able to exit their vehicles to toss their caps in the air. Finally, they will exit with each school’s principal waving the checkered flag from atop the flagstand, giving the students a great visual sign they are “officially” graduates.

Matanzas High School’s ceremony begins at 11:00, with gates opening at 9:30.

Flagler-Palm Coast High School’s ceremony begins at 4:00, with gates opening at 2:30.

The ceremonies are not open to the public and only vehicles with official passes may enter. Once the ceremony begins, no one will be allowed entry into the track. They will be streamed on each school’s website, as well as the Flagler Schools website.

In case of inclement weather, the ceremonies will be moved to June 1st. Notifications on changes will be made via the Flagler Schools, FPCHS, and MHS websites and social media. Phone calls will also be made.
