School Board Spotlights: February 2023

Spotlights

The monthly School Board Business Meeting was held on Wednesday, February 22, 2023 at the Government Services Building.

Superintendent Cathy Mittelstadt began the meeting by honoring Assistant Superintendent LaShakia Moore and District Safety Specialist Tommy Wooleyhan for their roles in saving a Flagler Schools employee's life earlier this year. The two worked together to perform CPR and use an AED when this employee collapsed. Their quick actions stabilized the employee as paramedics arrived.

Board Members took time to congratulate Spencer Edelstein. The Buddy Taylor Middle School 8th grader is this year's Flagler Schools District Spelling Bee champion. His championship round word was "stamina." This is Spencer's second consecutive year winning the district title. He will represent Flagler County in the 79th Annual First Coast Regional Spelling Bee, held in Jacksonville on March 31st.

The Board also heard from Adam Blair, K–12 Career and Technical Education Specialist with Flagler Schools, and Flagler Technical College director Renee Kirkland as we celebrate the month of February as CTE in Flagler Schools month. This included hearing from CTE students and educators.

Board Actions

The School Board took action on the following:

• Approved a contract with James Moore & Co., P.L. for internal auditing services. The firm will be responsible for performing audits of the District's 14 Internal Accounts and two Direct Support Organizations.
• Approved the establishment and rules and procedures for a Citizens Oversight Committee to review the expenditure of the sales tax proceeds collected by the renewal of the 1/2 Cent Sales Surtax. This committee will also report to the School Board annually.
• Approved an Early College Agreement with Daytona State College. This is a stand-alone agreement that used to be an appendix of the Daytona State College Collegiate High School Articulation Agreement.
• Approved the 2023–24 Instructional Calendar.
• Approved updating the following job descriptions:
  • Food Service Worker
  • Custodian
  • Facilities Specialist I
  • Facilities Specialist II
  • Lifeguard
  • Site Assistant
• Approved updated contract with the Flagler County Educators Association (FCEA)
• Gave the Board Attorney permission to advertise a district Narcan Policy

The School Board tabled an item on purchasing a Starlab Inflatable Portable Planetarium.
