Flagler Transition Specialist Wins State Award for Work with ESE Students

Ebru Snodgrass, Flagler Schools' Transition Specialist, has been honored with the Florida Division on Career Development and Transition's Debra Husted Memorial - Dreams Can Come True Award for Outstanding Educator in Transition, the district announced Wednesday.

The award recognizes an educator who provides exemplary transition services to students with disabilities, embodying tenacity, compassion, and a strong belief in their potential. It is named in memory of Debra Husted, who was known for her dedication to enhancing the lives of individuals with disabilities.

In a letter announcing the award, Dr. Kim Halliday, Flagler County Schools Director of Exceptional Student Education, highlighted Ms. Snodgrass's exceptional leadership and innovation in her two years with the district. Halliday quoted a message shared by Husted shortly before her passing: "Thank you for being a part of my life; work like you don’t need the money; love like you’ve never been hurt; and dance like no one is watching."

Dr. Halliday stated the award "honors those whose dedication, empathy, and passion echo Deb’s legacy by lifting up individuals with disabilities and guiding them toward brighter futures."

Dr. Halliday praised Snodgrass for her leadership of Flagler Schools' three transition programs: STREAM, TRAIL, and Project SEARCH. "Ms. Snodgrass has shown an unwavering commitment to empowering students with disabilities, providing them with critical skills, opportunities, and support as they prepare for life after high school," Dr. Halliday wrote.

A key achievement noted in the letter was Snodgrass's successful launch of the new Project SEARCH site

"Thanks to her proactive leadership, this program has become an invaluable resource, providing students with hands-on vocational training and meaningful work experiences," Dr. Halliday stated.

Ms. Snodgrass was also recognized for organizing two vocational training days for high school students with disabilities, offering them opportunities to explore local career paths. According to Dr. Halliday, "Through these initiatives, Ms. Snodgrass has helped bridge the gap between education and employment, ensuring that students are well-prepared for future success right here in Flagler County."

Furthermore, Ms. Snodgrass has made significant progress in developing vertical transition planning, a comprehensive system for 8th-grade students with disabilities.

This system, in collaboration with staffing specialists at the middle and high schools, "will ensure that transition planning begins early, and progresses consistently throughout a student’s high school years and into adulthood," Dr. Halliday explained.

She noted Ms. Snodgrass's collaborative approach, citing her regular attendance at meetings with stakeholders, including administrators, community partners, and families. "Her collaborative approach has led to stronger partnerships and greater community involvement, all contributing to the success of transition programs," Dr. Halliday wrote.

"Ms. Snodgrass consistently goes above and beyond the expectations of her role, investing countless hours and immense energy into every aspect of her work. Her commitment extends far beyond the classroom... Ms. Snodgrass’s exceptional drive and passion for student success make her an invaluable asset to Flagler Schools and an exemplary leader in the field of transition services. Ebru has had a transformative impact on the transition services at Flagler Schools."
