Welcome to First Grade!

 CONTACT INFORMATION

Email:  seatonc@flaglerschools.com
Phone (school) 446-6720  Cell:  386-793-4192
AOL Instant Messenger user name:  seaton1stgrade
The easiest way to contact me is by email.  I check it often during the day, and almost always have it open during the evenings.  If you need to talk to me, you can call me at school; if I’m teaching, I’ll call you back as soon as I can.  I do not get a cell phone signal in the school building, but I usually have it on most of time when I’m not at work.  This year, I’m trying something new and have a new AOL IM name just for my parents and students (seaton1stgrade).  I’ll try to log on during the evenings, and if you’d like to, we can “chat” online!

QUESTIONNAIRE:

I will be sending home a questionnaire the first week of school.  I want to know as much about your child as possible, and you’re the one who knows best!  Please send it back as soon as possible, and be sure to add your contact information for me.

LUNCH:
We are scheduled to have lunch from 11:15 – 11:45 a.m.  You are welcome (and encouraged) to come and have lunch with your child anytime.  You will need to sign in at the front desk, and then wait by the door to the cafeteria for your child.  I know you’ll be excited to see your child, but PLEASE do not come to the classroom – lining up the class can be a challenge on some days, and unexpected disruptions make it more difficult.

SPECIAL AREA CLASSES:
Our class will rotate among Health, Art, PE, Music, and Technology.  Be sure your student wears sneakers and comfortable clothing, appropriate for vigorous exercise!   J

SNACK TIME:

I do give the students time for snack, usually after our Special Area.  I will provide snacks for everyone the first week of school, although I do not do ‘community snacks’ in my class. Beginning August 25, if you’d like your child to have a snack, you must send one in with him/her.

COMMUNICATION FOLDERS:

Your child will be bringing home a Communication Folder each day with their planner; it is a colored, transparent folder (labeled “Communication Folder”).  I will use these to send home notes, newsletters, corrected papers, or anything else that you need to see.  PLEASE look for it every day, and use it to return any signed forms or notes to me.  Each morning, your child will take it out of his/her backpack and put it on the counter.  The first thing I’ll do is look to see if you’ve sent me any notes or forms, and at the end of the day, I’ll put it in the cubby to come home.

x
Transportation:
If you need to change how your child is going to go home from school (either just one time or permanently), please send me the information in writing, in your Communication Folder.  1st graders sometimes get information mixed up. And sometimes, even I do, too!

BIRTHDAYS:                                                                                                                                                 Parents are more than welcome to bring in a special snack to share with the class to celebrate their child’s birthday, but I ask that you PLEASE let me know ahead of time.  According to school policy, the food must be prepackaged (store bought) and brought in to school in the original container.  You should also plan on bringing in plates, napkins, etc.   If students are having a party outside of class, I will allow students to pass out invitations to the entire class only; otherwise invitations should be mailed from home.  Please let me know if you need a list of students’ first names.

x
SUPPLIES NEEDED:
A general supply list is available from the front desk or the District’s website, if you need one. Kindly send in all school supplies as soon as possible.  I do not do ‘community supplies’ so your child will keep the supplies they bring in, but please make sure to mark his/her name clearly on personal supplies.  Once crayons/markers/glue sticks/pencils hit the floor, if I cannot identify the owner, they become shared property.  J   If you’d like to help our class out, I welcome donations of tissues, hand sanitizer (big bottle!), paper towels, and especially dry erase markers.

STUDENT PLANNERS:
Students will be using planners this year.  The planner is an organizational tool to help students develop strong organizational skills and is a way of communicating important information to you, especially regarding student conduct.  If a student is on “green” all day, they’ll get a happy face stamped into their planner; anything else will result in a note in the planner from me.   As the year goes on, we’ll start to use the planner to put in reminders about upcoming events or things to remember.

HOMEWORK/INCOMPLETE WORK:

At this point, I’m planning on doing a MONTHLY homework calendar, with activities that you can choose to do each week.  Many of these are on the Internet, so please let me know as soon as possible if you do not have Internet access at home.  Of course, there are activities that your child should do every week, such as practicing spelling words and reading.  I will not start sending homework sheets home until after September 1; they’ll be in the Communication Folder. Any work not completed in class will be sent home that day in the planner and needs to be turned in the next day with a parent’s signature.  I’ll send home a note explaining why the work was not finished.
x
BEHAVIOR PLAN:
I use a wall chart with three colors.  Each child begins the day on green.  If they are not following classroom or school rules, they are given a verbal warning; at the next warning, the child will move his/her tag to yellow.  If the behavior continues, they will move their tag to red.  Each time they change the color card, they lose the opportunity to earn “pennies” that can be exchanged for items in the Treasure Box at the end of the week.  Look in your child’s planner for daily behaviors.  If any incident is severe or repeated, you will be notified by a note or phone call. The school office may also be notified.
x
TOYS:
We do not allow any toys to be brought to school.  This will avoid any personal toys getting broken or lost.  Toys cause a huge distraction to learning.  I will make exceptions only for days that we do “Show and Tell,” although even on those days, toys should be small enough to fit into the backpack.

WEBSITE:
My website is http://www.flaglerschools.com/schools/wes/teachers/seatonc.  On there, you can find the current homework (in case it gets lost!), class photographs, copies of the newsletters, and links to some fun, educational websites.

Together we’ll make this a great year for your child and you!
