3rd Grade Policies and Procedures:  2007-2008

The following policies and procedures are in place for the entire third grade, with the exception of students on a 504 or IEP, in which case all accommodations written in the students’ individual plan will be followed. Along with increased academic demands, students in third grade have increased responsibility. These policies and procedures are in place to ensure success this school year as well as in the future.

S.H.I.N.E.S:  All students will follow the SHINES rules posted and reviewed in the classroom.  Each individual teacher will have a step-discipline system with a loss of privileges and/or a note or phone call home and, if necessary, a yellow slip or referral.

Homework and Class Work:  The student planner is a means of communication between each student’s parents and his/her teacher(s).  However, this is also the main organizational tool for the student.  Each student is required to copy down his/her own homework daily.  It is the student’s responsibility to know what the homework is and clarify with the teacher, if necessary, prior to the end of the school day.  The student must bring home all materials needed to complete the homework.  Students will not be allowed to come back into the classroom at the close of the school day to retrieve materials. All assignments given in class must be completed during the allotted class time.  If an assignment is still missing after 1 week it will be given a zero.  Extra credit will not be given. Third grade has a “no excuse” homework policy.  Unless a parent writes a note regarding unusual and unforeseeable circumstances, excuses will not be accepted for missing homework. Students who do not complete their homework may be assigned to H.O.T. (Homework Opportunity Time) after school.

Grades:  Progress reports are given midway through each 9 weeks.  It is not uncommon for students’ grades to drop in third grade, as the academic demands are much greater.  If you are concerned, please contact your child’s teacher.
