Curriculum

We will cover the Sunshine State Standards that are required by the state for first grade.  Here is a brief overview of our curriculum and texts.

Language Arts and Reading:

We will be using Scott Foresman for our reading curriculum.  Your students reading, writing and grammar lessons will come from this series.

Reading Mastery and Read Naturally will also be used on a daily basis..  Reading Mastery  will focus on Phonics and comprehension skills.  Read Naturally enables students to become fluent readers.

The Reading Counts computer program will be used in the classroom.  This program allows the students to read books on his/her own reading level and then go to the computer to check for comprehension.

Writing and Grammar:

Using writing prompts from our Scott Foresman Reading series, we will learn to write using complete sentences with proper punctuation and capitalization.

The writing will be scored using a writing rubric.

Math:

We will be using the Harcourt math series.  In this series they will be introduced to all aspects of math.  (time, money, numbers, adding, subtracting, measurement, and using graphs)

Science and Social Studies:

This year we will be doing Social Studies and Science at the end of each school day to work on the skills stated in the Sunshine State Standards.  We will be using the Houghton Mifflin Science and Social Studies, along with Weekly Readers to support our Curriculum.  Your child will be graded using quizzes, test, class assignments and projects.

Homework:

We will assign homework on a weekly basis.  It will be given out on Mondays and students will return it by Friday.  Each night there will be a specific assignment.  The cover sheet will indicate which pages should be completed each night.  Please sign your child’s homework for each day’s assignment.
