Helpful Tips for Using Lexiles at Home

*When you receive your child's Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) results 3 times each year, you can use their reading lexile (level) to help them choose the perfect books to read!

How to Find Books on Your Child’s Lexile Level

  1. Go to www.lexile.com
  2. Click on orange box ‘Families’
  3. Click on Lexile Book Database (blue hyperlink)
  4. Click on ‘Advanced Book Search’ (in column on left side)
  5. ONLY enter the following:
    • Range: take your child’s Lexile and subtract 50 for the minimum, add 50 for the maximum.  Ex: if your child’s Lexile is 200, then enter 150 for the min. and 250 for the max.  **If your child scored at the BR level (beginning reader), enter 10 for the min. and 150 for the max
    • Development Rating: select ‘elementary’ for the drop-down menu (to avoid books with inappropriate content)
    • Click the ‘search’ button
    • Print the list for future use

This method of searching is useful if you are not sure where to begin.  The list will help you when you visit the library or look through your home library to find books appropriate for your child’s Lexile range.

How to Lexile Your Home Library (or library books)

  1. Go to www.lexile.com
  2. Click on orange box ‘families’
  3. Click on Lexile Book Database (blue hyperlink)
  4. Enter as much information as you can and then click ‘search’
This is a great tool for a quick Lexile check of your child’s books.  It is always easiest to use the ISBN number on the book to ensure a completely accurate search (located on the back cover (bottom) of the book).  If you are searching for a book that begins with the word ‘The’, omit this word for an accurate search. I hope this is helpful to you!  It really is an easy process, but beware…you may find yourself obsessed with lexiling all of the books in your house!!  Please feel free to email anytime if you need help or if you have any questions!
