Our lives today are often quite busy and hectic. Dedicating some time EVERY day to help improve your child's academics is a must. Try some of the following to help improve your child's road to success. It can be done! When students know that education is important to you, it becomes important to them.
Math
Practicing Math facts at home everyday is essential for students in the Title I Math program. Having a home partnership reinforcing classroom concepts will benefit your child tremendously. Students struggling in Math can often make tremendous gains by memorizing their simple addition facts and multiplication facts. Lives are busy, but a consistent 10-15 minutes everyday, will make all the difference in the world! (Flash cards work very well and can be made or purchased at the dollar store and practicing while traveling works great ).
Reading
All students should be reading at home each day. If you are not available and there is a younger sibling at home, students often love to read to them. If not, they can even read to a family pet. The key is to get them reading for 15 minutes a day. If they are reading to a pet or sibling, make sure to ask them about what they read today. Also, in the car going to and from sports or extra curricular activities is a great place as well. Choose a book that is about your child's interests, and that your child can be successful in reading. (The Flagler County Public Library is a great place to start). A book slightly below their ability level, works great. If they are frustrated from a book that is too high above their level, this will become a battle and they will likely fight you on it each day. Having them routinely read out loud improves fluency which in turn, improves comprehension. This is key to success, especially with a struggling reader. Remember, this does not necessarily have to happen during "homework" time. Be creative with when they do their reading and be enthusiastic about your child's abilities. Reinforcement and praise are essential!
Setting aside a regular time each day to practice Math facts and do their reading (be it while traveling to and from somewhere, at bedtime, at breakfast, whenever!) will help your child succeed in school. It is worth your effort!
