When we assign homework it is not designed to be busy work. We try to assign meaningful work that will help our students be more successful. If your child is meeting expectations they should be able to complete the homwork in, or close to, the time mentioned next to each activity. Memorized math facts are 10% of every student in Rymfire's math grade. In the first quarter of first grade students are expected to be able to add with sums no greater than 10. In is not uncommon for first graders to write slowly which can affect the amount of time spent on homework. Keep in mind this also affects them at school and on tests and will only improve with practice. When they are working on writing, help them only if absolutely necessary. They do have to write an expository essay from a prompt in 45 minutes from start to finish. For homework, we have broken this up over three days. If you are concerned with the amount of time your child is spending on homework, please let us know so we can discuss the problem.
