Spelling Activity Choices
Complete ONE activity from each category. Turn your assignment in the next day.
Have a parent give you a spelling pretest on Wednesday night.

Group A—Visual Activities
• Make flashcards and practice with someone.
•Write a child friendly definition for each of your spelling words.
• Write a sentence for each of your spelling words.
• Write your words five times each.
• Make a list of words that rhyme with your spelling words.
• Write your words in ABC order.
• Use magnetic letters and spell words on the refrigerator.
• Write a story- try to use all of this week’s spelling words.
• Write your words five times each.
• Use pieces of yarn to form the letters in your spelling words.
• Find one half (1/2) of your words in everyday use—in newspapers, magazines, cereal boxes, etc.  Highlight or underline the words that you find, attach it to a piece of paper and turn the piece of paper in.

Group B—Auditory Activities
• Use maracas, a tambourine, or a small drum to beat out a rhythm while you
spell each word.  Hit the instrument for each letter of the word.
• Sing the letters of each word to the tune of your favorite song.  Or, make up
a brand new tune instead!  (You might just become famous from doing this!)
• Have an adult in the house make up a sentence with a word and read it aloud.
Write down the sentence as he/she says it.  Circle the spelling word in each
sentence.  Do this for words 1-10 only.
• Tape record yourself spelling your words.
•  Take an oral practice test.
• Sing them loud, sing them soft- Ask your Mom or Dad to sing the letters for a spelling word to you in a loud voice. You echo the spelling and then sing it again in a soft voice. Now both of you sing the word in the voice you choose.
• Make up sentences using the words.
• Perform a “cheer” for your parents and let them guess what the words are.
(ex.—“Gimme a D!  Gimme an O!  Gimme a G! What does it spell?  DOG!!!”)
• Play “Name That Word!”  Sing the letters of a word to your parents.  Let
them try to guess the word before the other one does.  Do this for each
word.

Group C—Kinesthetic/Technological Activities
• Using your index finger, slowly write each word on your mom or dad’s back
and let them try to guess what word it is.  Then, let them write a word on
your back and guess which one they wrote.   Do this for each word.
• Write your words in the air with your finger.
• Cut out letters from magazines or newspapers to spell your words.
• Use pipe cleaners or wax sticks to make the letters to spell your words.
• Write your words on a whiteboard or with sidewalk chalk on the sidewalk.
• Type each of your spelling words on a computer, using a different font for
each word.
• Use a paintbrush and water to “paint” your words on the sidewalk.
• Dribble a ball or jump rope while spelling your words.
• Use clay or play-doh to make the letters to spell your words.
• Rainbow spelling: Write each word in every color of the rainbow.
• Write your words in salt, sugar, flour, or sand.
• Put your words into a crossword or word search and have someone at home find the words.  Go to http://puzzlemaker.school.discovery.com or www.funbrain.com/detect to do this.
•  Sign your words.
• Use alphabet cereal/pasta to spell each word.
•  If your parents give you permission, you can write the spelling words in
shaving cream on a window or the kitchen counter.  While your parents are
supervising you, cover the window or counter with a thin film of shaving
cream and then write each word in the shaving cream with your finger.  Be
sure to clean the window or counter top when you are finished!
