Second Grade Curriculum

We will cover the sunshine state standards that are required by the state for second grade students.  Here is a brief overview: Language Arts and Reading:We will be using the Harcourt reading series.  The spelling, grammar, and vocabulary lessons will come from this book.  The 90-minute reading block will include whole class instruction for phonics, spelling, writing, and grammar skills.  In addition to whole class instruction, the students will work in small groups at literacy centers. Centers include Comprehension Center, Writing Center, Fluency Center, Vocabulary Center, and Spelling/Grammar Center.  The students will be tested weekly on spelling, grammar, vocabulary, phonics, and comprehension. Math:We use the Harcourt Math series to cover the Sunshine State Standards for math in the second grade.  Our curriculum is set up so that we cover certain topics before the SAT 10 test that is given in spring.  Due to this you will notice that we skip around the math book and do not follow the chapters in numerical order. Science/Social Studies:We are using the Houghton Mifflin series for both of these subject areas. As a supplement I also use either the Scholastic News. This is an excellent magazine with real life articles and timely information that children can identify with easily.  Writing:  We use the Mary Lewis system.  We will begin the year with expository essays.  This type of essay is used throughout the curriculum.  After the winter break we will begin work on the narrative format.  Writing is scored using a rubric.  A copy of this rubric is available in the student planner so that you can see the criteria that are applied to a student’s writing.
