 DESCRIPTION

This class is an overview of Life Science and will include course content in the following areas;

  • The Nature of Science
  • Cell Biology and the Chemical Basis of Life
  • Plants, Animals, and Microorganisms
  • General Organization of the Living World
  • Genetics, Heredity, and Diversity
  • Systems of the Human Body
  • Ecology and Human Impact
  • Biological Change Through Time
  • Careers and Technology in the Life Sciences.

It is designed to allow students to become familiar with the scientific study of Life Science and the structure and function of living organisms and their environments.

GENERAL GOALS

All students will achieve the following objectives:

  • Acquire the knowledge of the basic characteristics of life
  • Develop an understanding of the differences in characteristics that distinguish organisms and their classification systems
  • Explore and compare the anatomical structures of simple and complex organisms
  • Develop a familiarity with the physiology of how body systems work
  • Become familiar with the basic principles of heredity
  • Understand  the basic structures of microorganisms
  • Discover the interconnections among living and non-living things and become aware of man’s impact on the environment
  • Note the development and evaluate the impact of scientific research and technology from sociological, economical, and ethical perspectives.

All course content will align with the Sunshine State Standards and all quizzes and tests will be created using the same type and format of questions that are used on the FCAT.

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS

Students are expected to show up for class daily with positive attitudes, proper school/class supplies, any homework, and following all rules and regulations set forth by the Pathways Administration.  As you will see from the grading policy, attendance and a good consistent work ethic are necessary to pass this class.  Students will read, take notes, and complete various assignments on a daily basis.  They will have homework at least 3 times a week, and when there is no homework or they have finished early, studying covered material and notes is crucial as there will not only be quizzes for each chapter but also one final exam at the end of each marking period which will cover all material from that marking period.  Students will not only be expected to work individually but also in groups as teamwork and teambuilding are an important characteristic to posses both in class and out.  Disrespect for others space and things, improper language, and misuse of class materials will not be tolerated.  If they’re not having fun they’re not trying hard enough, science is awesome!!!
