Writing

Writing involves four components:

Focus                         focus of writing is on the topic and it is thoroughly addressed
Organization*            ideas or events are organized and follow the pattern of writing style
Support                      details are provided and vivid vocabulary used
Conventions              grammar, sentence structure and spelling

* Organization may be of two styles, either narrative (story) or expository (informational)
Stories are expected to have a clear beginning, middle, and end and include a problem, three attempts to solve the problem, and a solution.
Expository writing is expected to have 4 or more paragraphs-an introduction, 2 supporting paragraphs with main ideas and supporting details that support the topic, and a conclusion.

You can find our district's writing rubric (a chart that shows how your child's writing is graded based on the four components above) in your child's planner, or you may request one and I will send one home with your child.

If you have any questions or would like to have more information about writing, please let me know.
I will be happy to provide you with additional information and resources.
