Due Monday 9/29/08   Create an abstract work of art that represents freedom
Students will draw, paint, create, or construct a project that expresses what they feel represents freedom. Projects should be in abstract form; students were instructed not to simply draw a picture of a person voting or a picture of an American symbol. An abstract art work means that when someone looks at it, it will create feeling and a response, but the viewer will not be able to recognize excactly what it is. Our art teacher explained this to the class and it was discussed. Examples and ideas were provided. Each project should be the creative work of the student.
Other ideas are welcome-please talk with me if you would like to include technology or have an idea for the project we did not discuss.

What are some shrill noises?
What are some dismal situations?

Due Wednesday 9/24/08  Paragraph (4-5 sentences) Main idea-details based on:
Campanella's Cosmos: "Mr. Popper's Penguins"
Laughren's Lightning: "What Freedom Means"

Please read every day!

Students are expected to read a minimum of 30 minutes every day. Reading should be from a variety of materials including chapter books, letters or journals, news articles, magazine articles, or information on the web. It is also important to read items in daily life such as a job application, advertisements, charts and graphs, phone books, and other materials that are needed to be successful in every day activities.

  • Additional Homework Activities

Following is an excellent resource for activities your child can do at home to support what we are learning in 5th grade this year. While these are not required, they are certainly helpful in developing further knowledge and skills.

Important Note:

Students are expected to be responsible for completing their own homework and submitting it on time. Students should have all of the knowledge and skills needed to complete each assignment and should not be "struggling" with homework. I encourage the students to come see me if they are having difficulty or need further guidance with an assignment.

Each assignment must be submitted with the first and last name of the student written in print in the upper left hand corner of the paper. Papers not following this format will not be accepted.

Thank you!
