- Accomplish (verb) - To do something successfully. A big thing I want to accomplish is to learn another language.
- Capable (adjective) - Able to do something. I am capable of winning a dance contest.
- Dedicate (verb) - To commit time and energy to a goal. I dedicate myselft to becoming a deejay.
- Individual (noun) - A person. Only one individual can be class president.
- Pursue (verb) - To continue doing an activity or trying to achieve something over a long time. I will pursue a career in music.
- Consequence (noun) - The result of an action. An accident is a possible consequence of careless driving.
- Undertake (verb) - to try or attempt. I undertake the job of walking the dog everyday.
- Resolve (verb) - to decide to try hard to do something. I resolve to make varsity this year.
- Main idea - The most important idea in a text.
- Details - Bits of information that tell more about the main idea (or topic) and help you answer the questions: who? what? where? when? why? how?
- Define - to explain or describe something exactly. A personal goal I've defined for myself is to get better grades.
- Emphasize - to show that an opinion, idea, quality, etc. is important; to stress. His speech emphasized the need for healthier lunches in school cafeterias.

- Compare and Contast - A method of organization in a text that points out the ways two or more things are alike (compare) and the ways two or more things are different (contrast).
Determine - To decide or settle upon when given several options.
Dialogue - A conversation between two characters in a drama or narrative.
Accurate - Exact; correct.
Illustrate - To clarify or explain something using pictures or words.
Confirm - To make sure of the truth; verify.
Fact - Information that can be proven true.
- Opinion - An expression of a personal belief that cannot be proven true.
Emphasize - To show that an opinion, idea, or quality is important; to stress.
Cause and Effect - A method of organization in a passage that answers the questions: “Why did it happen?” (the reason) and “What happened?” (the result).
Significant - Very important; special.
- Predict/Prediction - This is when you use the facts in the story and other information you know about the world to guess what will happen.
- Chronological Order - A method of organization in a passage that tells of events in the time order in which they happen.
- Stanza - A group of related lines in a poem.
- Sequence - The order in which events occur or ideas are presented.
- Nonfiction - Writing that tells about real people, places, and events.
- Fiction - Writing that tells about imaginary characters and events.
- Inference - A logical guess, or conclusion, based on known facts and hints or evidence.
