Every one of my students is expected to read twenty (20) minutes each night as part of their “home fun”. They are to log their reading in the Home Fun Reading Log I have provided and then write a one-sentence summary of what they have read. I am asking that either a parent or guardian sign the margin of the reading log each night to indicate that the homework was completed. Reading logs will be collected once a month and graded: eighteen to twenty entries will earn an A, sixteen or seventeen entries will earn a B, fourteen or fifteen entries will earn a C, twelve or thirteen entries will earn a D, and eleven or less will earn a failing grade.
Why do I feel so strongly about this reading strategy? Practice makes perfect. Consider sports for example: you don’t throw a perfect pass or consistently hit the ball over the fence unless you practice. Reading is the same way. Research has shown that “Students who are part of the communities of readers outside the classroom are able to get the opportunities that are required to develop high levels of silent reading fluency and comprehension.”
Thank you for your support.
