    9th Grade Intensive Reading Class

    9th Grade Intensive Reading Syllabus and Outline/Objectives of this class:

    &    Teachers will use the model/practice/apply method of instruction

    &    There will be vocabulary instruction everyday with a Word of the Day as well as direct instruction when found in text

    &   Daily independent reading will be done in class for 20 minutes as well as 20 minutes at home and recorded on the Home Fun Reading Log

    & Developing strategic reading through use of before, during and after reading strategies

    & Developing fluency and appreciation of reading through independent selection of materials

    &   Journals will be used not only as a response as to what is read but also as a avenue to express what has been learned.

    &  Student data will be discussed with student at beginning of year as well as the halfway point and at the end.

    &  Student will be given the Kaplan and the Maze three times each during the year to monitor growth 

    Below you will find a rough outline of what we are doing in Intensive Reading Class, by month for the 2008-2009 school year.  

    August- FCAT score Review, Explanation of Blooms Taxonomy, Introduction of Reciprocal                     Teaching

    September- Complete instruction will be given on the parts for RT, predicting, questioning,         clarifying, and summarizing. These will also include instruction on Main Idea and Reference and Research

    October- Our main focus for this month is Main Idea. We will be using resources from;   Preparing for FCAT- FCAT Review, pg 52-72, Hero’s Critical Services, pg 1-21, Timed  Reading Plus pgs 4-19 and teacher selected articles with particular focus on Florida history

    November- Our main focus for this month is Reference and Research. We will be using   resources from; Preparing for FCAT- FCAT Review, pg 150-191, Hero’s Critical Services, pg 23-31, Timed Reading Plus pgs 17-24 and teacher selected articles with particular focus on Florida History

    December- Students will be applying the FCAT strategies already learned to a novel that will be read in class. The novel Nothing but the Truth by Avi, this novel will take us in to the  second week of January as well. The novel will be predominately read in class, due to having a class set. If you would like to have a book to read at home please know that they can be purchased online at Amazon. 

    January- Our main focus for this month is Compare and Contrast. We will be using resources from; Preparing for FCAT- FCAT Review, pg 113-130, Hero’s Critical Services, pg 46-53, Timed Reading Plus pgs 30-50 and teacher selected articles with particular focus on Florida History

    February- The first weeks of February will be focused on Compare and Contrast as well. The third or fourth week we will spend reviewing the final the students took.

    March- In March we will cover basic test strategies that will assist students on FCAT. The third   week of March is the FCAT test. After the FCAT the class will be starting their second novel, Tangerine by Edward Bloor. The novel will be predominately read in class, due to having a class set. If you would like to have a book to read at home please know that they can be purchased online at Amazon. 

    April- We will wrap up Tangerine in the month of April. There will be a final project as well as daily work associated with the book, please be on the look out for more information on this novel.

    May- In order to support content areas with Reading Strategies, we will begin using those           strategies to begin a unit on World Geography and World History. March will be World          Geography.  The students will apply the Reference and Research skills to this unit.

    Materials Needed for this Class

    Each student will be asked to provide the following materials for this class: 
    • 1 to 1 1/2 inch 3 ring binder
    • A set of 5 dividers labeled (Class-work, SSR, Vocabulary, Centers, and Journals )
    • Plenty of notebook paper
    • Blue or Black Pens (please no colored gel pens) and pencils
    • 3 different color highlighters
