Students will be supplied with a Home Fun Reading Log, single subject spiral notebook, and Blooms, RT, SSR folder. Some students may wish to have a one inch notebook to keep graded papers, etc. I prefer regular #2 wood pencils (no mechanical pencils please) and blue or black ink pens (no pastel gel pens). Semester 1

Unit 1:  The Power of Storytelling – This unit will include FRI strategies such as Reciprocal Teaching, QAR, and GIST. We will focus on Elements of Literature such as plot, setting, characterization, tone, and point of view through the reading of the following fiction: Lamb to the Slaughter, The Most Dangerous Game, Gift of the Magi, The Lottery, The Cask of Amontillado, and With Their Eyes: a nonfiction first-hand accounts of 911. We will also study literary devices, expository writing, and vocabulary development.

Unit 2: All in the Family – FRI strategies and Elements of Literature will continue through the reading of The Scarlet Ibis, Marine Corps Issue, and Cloud. The novel is yet to be determined, but I am leaning toward Speak or Fallen Angel. We will begin persuasive writing and explore making inferences and understanding author’s purpose. Nonfiction and informational articles will supplement the unit.

Unit 3: Passages – FRI strategies and Elements of Literature will be ongoing throughout the year. In Unit 3 we will add poetry and experiment with figurative language through activities as well as writing What If and I Am poems.  We will read Life without Go-Go Boots, Unfinished Business, and American History. Our novel will be Monster or Hoops. These three units should bring us to the mid-term. Our mid-term assessment will be a taken from our McDougal Littell Formal Assessment supplement.  Another syllabus for the second semester will be distributed at that time.
