Program Information

History

Matanzas High School Choral Program started with opening of the Matanzas High School in August 2005 as a class of approximately 35 members of different backgrounds and prior choral experiences. Now we are offering three groups: Apprentice Choir for beginning students, and Concert Choir and "Jazz Fusion" vocal ensemble for the upper-class students.

Course Description

Apprentice Choir

Grades 9-12. This ensemble is intended for the less-experienced singer. Students will learn and practice proper vocal technique. Emphasis will be placed on musical elements such as music theory, music history, and sight singing. Participants will perform 2 or 3 times a semester. Grades are based on participation, concert attendance, and demonstrated knowledge of musical concepts.

Concert Choir

Grades 10-12. Prerequisite: At least one semester of Apprentice Choir or previous vocal experience. Students will be selected to participate in the ensemble based on musical ability and responsibility toward the preparation and performance of many musical styles. Students will work on their musical skills and vocal technique. This chorus performs many times throughout the year and participates in district contests. Grades are determined by participation, concert attendance, and demonstrated mastery of musical skills.

"Jazz Fusion"

Grades 10-12. 12-16 singers. Prerequisite: Enrollment in the Concert Choir. Students will be selected based on musical ability and responsibility toward the preparation and performance of jazz and a cappella styles. Students will work on their musical skills, vocal technique, and basic choreography. This ensemble performs many times throughout the year and participates in district contests. Grades are determined by participation, concert attendance, and demonstrated mastery of musical skills.

Performances

Our performances include singing at the Candlelight Procession at the Epcot Theme Park, Stetson University Choral Clinic, and Florida Vocal Association Choral Festivals. We also perform for private and community organizations of Flagler, Volusia and St. Johns counties, and often join in the collaborative performances with Indian Trails Middle School Choruses. Our wide repertoire includes Spirituals, Gospel and Multicultural arrangements, Classics, Jazz, Holiday, Modern choral works and others.

To New Members

Being a member of Matanzas High School Choruses is an exciting experience.  It is not necessary that you read music or have prior musical knowledge. We look for good singing voices and people who like music. A member with a positive, inspiring attitude will contribute to the success of the whole group. You will find it rewarding to learn new songs with proper vocal techniques and carry them out in a dynamic musical performance. Every member of the chorus will have an opportunity to try their strength as a soloist during the school year. The best solo performers will be giving chance to participate in the Florida Vocal Association Solo/Small Ensemble Festival.
