Service Need: To inform the local community of problems associated with invasive plant species as they relate to biodiversity and to generate public awareness of the preservation and use of native plant species in Flagler County.
Describe the service activities that are a part of the Service Learning project: Students will clear a designated location of one or more identified invasive plant species and invite the community to become involved in their effort. Students will also compile a “learning box” that will be used to transmit their knowledge of invasive plant species in Flagler County to students in the 4th grade at Belle Terre Elementary School who are involved in the Florida Studies curriculum. The learning box will contain student-created
resources that will be set up in 6 hands-on stations in the 4th grade classroom. A laminated plant identification key chain that identifies native and invasive plants in Flagler County will be among the resources included in the learning box. Some additional student-created resources for the learning box will include items such as; worksheets, coloring pages, games, a power point presentation, and real-life samples of invasive/native plants commonly found in Flagler County.
Advanced classes will complete Science Fair Projects that relate to varying aspects of native and invasive plants in Florida.
