You have a small family practice on a South Shetland Island, which is off the coast of the Antarctica Pennisula. Usually business is quite slow. However, over the 2 weeks, you have 20 patients visit your office with the same peculiar symptoms. You prescribe antibiotics, but they do not work. You examine tissue samples under a compound microscope and notice cell damage, but cannot see bacteria or other foreign organisms. You decide that it must be a viral infection. Three of the patients died yesterday.

1. Describe the symptoms.

2. Make a list of five diseases that share at least one of the symptoms you observed.
