Spanish I Syllabus 
  1. Course Overview

Selected 8th Grade students will study the Spanish I core curriculum as a full year academic course in the middle school.  Students who achieve a satisfactory level of understanding, completion of the course with a grade of “B” or better, and with the recommendation of the certified teacher will be awarded High School credit for their work.  The student will be eligible to continue at the High School in Spanish II in the 9th Grade.  Satisfactory completion of this course will require a higher level of work and commitment.

 
  1. Course Objectives
    a.  Engage in conversation in Spanish to express feelings and ideas and exchange opinions.

    b.  Demonstrate understanding of spoken and written Spanish on a variety of topics
    c.  Present information and ideas to an audience through speaking and writing in Spanish.
    d.  Demonstrate understanding of social interaction patterns within Spanish culture(s) through participation in cultural activities.
    e.  Apply knowledge of Spanish language and culture(s) to further knowledge of other disciplines.
    f.  Analyze and use different patterns of communication and social interaction appropriate to the setting.
    g.  Demonstrate knowledge of use of the Spanish language within and beyond the school setting.

In this chapter you will learn to

  • Ask someone’s name and say yours
  • Ask how someone is and say how you are
  • Introduce people and say where they are from
  • Give phone numbers, the time, the date, and the day
  • Spell words and give email addresses

And you will use

  • Subjects, verbs, and subject pronouns
  • Numbers 0-31
  • The alphabet
  • The verb ser
  • Punctuation marks and written accents

Chap.2

In this chapter you will learn to

  • Describe people
  • Ask someone’s age and birthday
  • Talk about what you and others like
  • Describe things
 

And you will use

  • ser with adjectives
  • Gender and adjective agreement
  • Questions
  • Nouns and definite articles
  • gustar, por que? and porque
  • The preposition de

Chap. 3

In this chapter you will learn to

  • Talk about what you and others like to do
  • Talk about what you want to do
  • Talk about everyday activities
  • Say how often you do things

And you will use

  • gustar with infinitives
  • Pronouns after prepositions
  • querer with infinitives
  • Regular -ar verbs
  • ir and jugar
  • Weather expressions

Chap. 4

In this chapter you will learn to

  • Say what you have and need
  • Talk about classes
  • Talk about plans
  • Invite someone to do something

And you will use

  • Indefinite articles, cuanto?, mucho, and poco
  • tener and some tener idioms
  • venir and a la/las with time
  • ir a with infinitives
  • Regular and irregular -er and -ir verbs
  • Tag questions

Chap. 5

In this chapter you will learn to

  • Describe people and family relationships
  • Talk about where you and others live
  • Talk about your responsibilities

And you will use

  • Possessive adjectives
  • Stem-changing verbs: almorzar, dormir, volver, merendar, entender, and empezar
  • Estar with prepositions
  • Negation with nunca, tampoco, nada, and nadie

In this chapter you will learn to

  • Take an order and make polite requests
  • Talk about meals
  • Offer help and give instructions

  • pedir, servir, preferir, poder, and probar
