What Have We Done
Here are just a few examples of the work that students have made over the course of the last semester. This batch of photos are the latest on the Genetics unit we just finished. Take a Look!!!

| In our journey to understanding how genes are passed down from parent to offspring, the students had to first learn of the most important and most fundamental building block on which life is based on, and that is of the DNA molecule. Each student identified the parts of a DNA molecule and its unique structure, and then built a model to know how traits are passed on using the 4 nitrogenous bases that determine individual traits. Students also recognized that if DNA is not copied exatly as it should, the result could be a mutation, that could prove harmful, yet some to be beneficial. | |
Sesame Street Genetics In this activity, students were to take their two Sesame street parents, and their traits, and determine the outcome of the offspring. Percentages of genotypes(genes) and phenotype (physical appearance) had to be determined. Students were given either Human or Monster character sheets, and determined whether their offsprings skin or fur color, placement of their eyes, and whether or not their offspring was a boy or a girl. The end product was to have students draw the 4 possible outcomes. A student example is drawn below. | ![]() |

SHHHHHH.....Bugs Sleeping!!!!!!!Chromobug Genetics Similar to the Sesame Street Genetics Activity, students had to act like parents to determine the outcome of their new "Chromobug". Students were given "cells" that carried their genes, and through random selection (that occurs in our cells), students had to pick (without looking) the traits that their new baby were going to have. Using basic materials such as marshmallows, toothpicks, and pipe cleaners, students created their new baby and had to place them in the newly built "Chromobug Nursery". (Students could visit them daily while they came to class.) | ![]() |
