When calculating grades, I prefer to use a points system. In using a points system, I am able to "weight" assignments without all of the math. Here are a listing of the point categories that I am using this year.
Projects | 100 - 200 points |
Tests | 100 points |
Quizzes | 50 points |
Labs | 50 points |
Science Articles | 20 points |
Class work | 20 - 80 points |
Journals | 2 points per entry |

Most of the time you will see the grades in fraction form. The numerator (number on top) represents the number of points earned on the assignment. The denominator (number on the bottom) represents the number of possible points for the assignment (if the numerator is larger than the denominator, then extra credit has been earned). To calculate the grade, divide the numerator by the denominator.
For example: If Marissa Browne earned a grade of a 35/50 on a quiz, then her percentage is a 70 C.
