Reading is important in all subject areas.  In American History we will read from the textbook, primary source documents, assorted articles, and historical novels.  Over the course of the year, I will place reading activities on this page to help the learner get the most from each of the readings we complete in class or at home. 

SSNQR Notes    Instructions    (Survey, Setup, Notes, Questions, Review)

  1. Divide paper into two columns lengthwise.  The 1st column should be about 1/4th of the page and the second column should be the remaining 3/4th of the page.
  2. Complete SSNQR Notes for each assigned section in the textbook.
  3. Complete the Section Assessment. You do not have to do the Recall questions. You must do all of the Comprehension questions. Choose 1 of the Critical Thinking and Writing questions.
  4. SSNQR Notes for each section will be worth 40 points on the notebook grade sheet. (20 for the notes and 20 for the section assessment).
  5. Keep the SSNQR notes in your history notebook.  Be sure to review these notes before quizzes and tests. Keep all SSNQR notes in your notebook until e final exam.

Write 3 questions based on the survey                           
S = Setup: Set up paper for notes                                A.   Date, Chapter and Section, Title of Section                                B.   Divide page 1/4th and 3/4th S = Survey:  Read Objectives, Key Terms, review all maps, pictures, and graphs
 Write 1 question for each blue and red titled section. Q= Write answer to question.A=N = Notes:  Take the following notes on every section assigned:                     (You may skip the “Setting the Scene”)
  1. Write down the Blue and Red section heading titles. Highlight each in 2 different colors.
  2. Write down all words in light blue (key terms) and their definitions.
  3. Write down all names of people and items in a numbered list that are mentioned in the section.
  4. Write down the Main Idea (MI=) of each section (usually the 1st or last sentence of the paragraph)
Answer any unknowns with guesses or predictionsQ = Questions:  Write 1 question for each blue heading and red heading. Write it in the skinny column across from that section of notes.
