Dear Student and Parent,

Welcome to a new semester. Progress reports will be given out half-way through the first nine weeks and second nine weeks. Students can access their grades through an internet site. (Access information will be given in the future) Report cards are given out after the mid term and at the end of the semester.

The overall grading policy for my classroom will be based on:

Tests/ Quizzes                          worth 25% of the total class grade

            Mid-term /Final Exams               worth 20%

            Home/Class Assignments          worth 35%

            Labs/Projects                           worth 15%

            Participation                             worth  5%

Students were given a brief overview of the course along with the classroom rules. Parents feel free to go over these with your student.

Laboratory work in Marine Science and Biology course includes dissection of preserved specimens. Students should have a pair of latex gloves (“Playtex”) for dissection. These can be cleaned and kept in a drawer assigned to the student. Aprons and protective goggles will be provided in the classroom. Students opting out of dissections for personal reasons will be given an alternative method (internet) of dissection; thereby, learning the same material as the students in the classroom.

Video and DVD movies and documentaries will be used in this course. Many have a “G” or "PG" rating or have been previously viewed by the Flagler County School Board. Some documentaries may be graphic in the portrayal of animal behavior. Movies that have a “PG-13” rating require parental permission for the student to watch.

Students are not required to view material that may be offensive to them. An alternative assignment related to the unit being taught and reinforced by the movie will be provided if you do not grant permission for your child to view any of the materials.

Field trips will be planned based on availability of buses and the cooperation of the weather. Students on field trips that take more than one class period will be required to get permission from their other teachers to participate. They will be required to make up any missed assignments from their other teachers. Students that do not participate on a field trip will be given an alternate assignment which compliments the field work. Likewise, students attending field trips from other classes need to be passing the course to be able to attend.  Please sign and return the attached form. Please feel free to comment or note any limited participation on behalf of the student.
