9/5:  Discussed homework from yesterday(six sent Imperfect to Preterite conversion); left in notebook,Copied more time expressions from board and did translation exercise.  Also, started reading El Arbol de Oro on pages 38-40 of textbook.  Go to www.learnspanish.com for verb drills on Preterite and Imperfect tenses.  Students took journals home to finish today's entry. Journals must be brought back to classroom Monday.

9/8:  Test Unit 1 includes: Preterite use and congugations vs. Imperfect use and conjugations, idioms with "dar" and "echar"(conjugated), time expressions(in notes from the board), Culture(Castilla-La Mancha, pages 36-37 of textbook).

Text format is 50 multiple choice questions.  Bonus question(for 2 bonus points)- relates to weather report publication read in class.

This week's Idioms are:  Idioms with "HABER":"hay luna"- there is moon, "hay neblina"- it is foggy, and "hay polvo"- it is dusty

Continue to read El Arbol de Oro and answer quetions at the end of the story.

9/9:  Each student recites  one half of poem "Memorandum" from memory.  You will have a quiz on vocabulary from El Arbol de Oro on Friday.  Also, the following expressions will be included(idioms of the week):

-hay luna: there is moon, hay neblina: it is foggy, hay polvo- it is dusty!!!!

9/10: Memorized news reports

9/11: 2nd period to 911 ceremony in auditorium(homework: read El Arbol de Oro at home tonight.).  1st period: Read story in class(El Arbol de Oro)- have to answer questions at home and bring to class tomorrow, watched Spain film in class and discussed(Spain, Everything Under the Sun).

9/12:  Second period class students who still have to present their articles, need to do so today or they will receive a 0 for this assignment which cannot  be made up at a later date.  Quiz on vocabulary from El Arbol de Oro(Students were provided with copy of the words yesterday in class.) will be on Monday.

9/15:

1)Write a journal entry about you and your family(15 min.)

2)In pairs, write a question and an answer using the two most difficult vocabulary words (most difficult to the student) from El Arbol de Oro when you see a golden tree./Read to the class. 3)Reviewed vocabulary with index cards.4)Take matching quiz.5)Copy words about the family from board.

9/16: Recited verse to Carlos Vives' song El Amor de Mi Tierra.

9/17: Article Report #3/ Homework: Write a Diamond poem about your family.

9/18: Read diamond poems and received 20 points, read article from culture reader, answered questions orally, filled in concept map on notebook from yesterday's notes, were introduced to the subjunctive mode(copied notes from board and received photocopies with more information on the subjunctive mode, also watched a grammar video that illustrates the structure and formation of sentences in the subjunctive.  Received a reading assignment(on photocopy).  Students will have all questions(on the margin of the article sheet) answered when they come to class tomorrow.

9/19:  Wrote journal entry, copied notes from the board(more verbs in the subjunctive; see electronic cards on SchoolNotes site.), Wrote 10 sentences in the subjunctive for a grade, and turned in homework from last night(reading article on grandparents, and answering questions on the margin of the article on photocopy received yesterday.

1)        Announcements: Unit 2 test will be Monday, Sept. 29 and go over expressions relating to what parents say on photocopy (translate as we read.) No article report this Wednesday.  No poem memorization this Tuesday.2)       In pairs, chose a sentence from the “parents say” list and have one student say it and another respond to the request./Read to the class.3)       Copy names of family members from teacher’s web site.4)       Go over Cultura on pages 110-111 of textbook; then listen to text on CD 3, Tr.6-8/Talk about verbs that appear on the text in the subjunctive mode, and answer “Para Comprender” on page 111.5)       Review subjunctive conjugations from SchoolNotes electronic cards.

9/23:  Build a family tree using construction paper leaves and in the Media Center do research on a Spanish surname to present on Thursday.

9/24:  Students presented family trees in class, and received Ojala que llueva cafe en el campo song.

9/25:  Students started presenting origins of Spanish last names.

9/26:  Students finished presenting origins of surnames from yesterday.  They watched Clara Perspective(telenovela), and received practice packet to work on over the weekend.  Directions were given on how to answer each section.  It will be discussed in class on Monday.  Test will be Wednesday!

9/29:       Discussed packet from Friday, and watched Power Point Presentation to review the use of Subjunctive Vs. Indicative.  Test is still this Wednesday. 

9/30:  Did written review in class and discussed answers.  Test is tomorrow.

10/1:  Took test Unit 2 and watched film about Art and Recreation in Latin America(Turned in 5 differences between Hispanic and North American lifestyles.

10/2: 
  1. Wrote a journal entry in 15 min. (Free topic)
  2.  Copied vocabulary from projected Word Document(in notebook).
  3. Went over vocabulary/whole class
  4. Pp 188-189 textbook- Go over /Do Listening act. in Lab Book, p29(photocopy).
  5. Got in pairs.  Wrote a skit(Topic of skit: At a museum, friends comment on a painting or sculpture.)
  6. Vista de Toledo:  Projected  painting and discussed characteristics of the painting.
  7. Practiced ¡Ojalá que llueva Café! to recite first verse tomorrow in class.

10/3:  Recited verse to song Ojala que llueva cafe en el campo by Juan Luis Guerra y 4:40, discussed pages 190-191 of textbook, did lab exercise 8 in audio exercises worksheet, and watched Clara Perspectiva(except 2nd period).  There will be article reports next Wednesday, october 8; therefore you must start searching for an article this weekend.  Your fluency or lack of it when reporting will affect your grade, so be well prepared.  You can use the questions you copied (in your notebook) to guide your report. 

10/6: Watched film on biography and work of Francisco de Goya y Lucientes.  Answered questions about the film.  This information will be part of next test. 

10/7:  Filled out bubbles on cartoon strip and read and analyzed Shakira's song: "Qué me quedes tú". Students turned in a written analysis of the lyrics. 

10/8: Article reports today!  You must present the original report on hard copy to get all your points.  Students who don't can only receive a maximum of half of the total points.  Students turn in articles without presenting, do not receive any points at all, and the grade for the report is automatically a 0.

10/9: Wrote description of painting by Goya El Balile a Orillas del Manzanares and turn in for 20 points.  Started watching biography of Salvador Dali.

10/10: Finished watching biography of Dali.  Took notes on origins, most important people in Dali's life, most important work, and Dali's philosophy and fears. Students also wrote a dialogue in pairs from Communication section of textbook page 193. Finally, students created pumpkins out of construction paper using a Spanish painter's style(Goya or Dali).

10/13:  Students practiced Preterite and Imperfect with info. about Dali and Goya from a transparency/Context can be found in flashcards at www.schoolnotes.com, zip code 32110.  They also started watching a film on Picasso.  Shakira's song verse will be recited from memory by students tomorrow.

10/14:  Recited Shakiras'song lyrics and watched Picasso.

10/15:  Classes did not meet due to PSAT.

10/16:  Wrote a 50 wd. descriptive paragraph about Primeros Pasos by Picasso(Look up online and make up this assignment if you were not in class.) Discussed answers to Exam 1 already taken(See Tests Taken on this web site.)

10/17: Presented projects and received card with wrong answers to tests 1 and 2 already taken.  Click on "Tests Taken" on this web site to access both tests.  Mid-Term exam questions come from these tests and new material(unit on art: vocabulary and painter studied.).  If you missed a lesson on an artist, look him/her up in the Internet or click on one of my links on my "Links" page on this web site.  Your Mid-T exam is next Tuestday, Oct. 21st.

10/20: Watch biography of Frida Kahlo and answered questions about it.

10/21: Took Mid-Term exam.

10/22:  Started new unit on food/Signed up for a country.  There will be a news report next wednesday(on the country you signed for!  Go to www.thepaperboy.com to find news from different Spanish-speaking countries.  Wrote a monlogue in class and read back for corrections.

10/23:  Prepared flash cards in class with names of foods, lesson on commands(ar--a, er--e, ir--e for verbs/to give a command to many people use the subjunctive of the verb in the "ustedes" form/for negative commands use "no" and the subjunctive of the verb.), in groups: wrote cheers and shared with the class.  A participation grade for the day was recorded for each student's participation in multiple activites of the day.

10/24: Stay home today!  Teachers are working on grades, etc.  =0)

10/27:  Monologues about favorite foods and worksheet with questions about foods.

10/28:  Menu in groups and planned Restaurant skit.

10/29: En El Restaurante skit

10/30: News article report

10/31: Quiz on food vocabulary and preparation of a recipe in Spanish that contains a crop native to the Americas.  You can bring a dish to sample on Wednesday that contains the crop you selected as one of the ingredients(for bonus points).  Students also completed a Word Search and matching worksheet.

WEDNESDAY, NOV. 5 ACTIVITIES:  Both first and second block classes will report to class as usual.  First Period: Students will talk about the recipes they translated into Spanish last Friday.  Some students will bring dishes/food items for an extra assignment grade.  Foods will be sampled in class(If you are bringing a food item, you must also bring disposeable serving ware such as cups, small plates/bowls, napkins, forks, spoons.  Your food item MUST contain one of the crops/products found in the Word Search we did Friday in class.).  Second Period:  First Period students will join Second Period students in class for a lesson on Native Crops of the Americas that are used in Hispanic dishes today.  We will move to the vocational building to watch a Demonstration on how to make a dessert that uses cocoa(Native American crop).  You will have the opportunity to sample this and other foods(students bonuses) in the culinary arts room.  Your cooperation in this activity is expected and greatly appreciated since we will have 38 students in a rather small room. 

THURSDAY, NOV. 6 ACTIVITIES:  All classes will report to room 7-223 as usual.  After attendance is taken, we will move to the Media Center to work on a Power Point presentation on Gastronomia of your country(the one assigned to you at the beginning of the new quarter).  Your presentation MUST have 10 slides.  Slides must contain information about the most popular dishes of your country, method of preparation, ingredients used, origins of the recipes, pictures of the foods/dishes, eating habits /patterns of the people of your country, and any interesteing fact about the gastronomy of your country that makes it unique.  You will prepare to present your project using English to communicate verbally even though your slides contain information IN SPANISH.  You will elaborate on the contents of your slides.  Your first slide MUST display the name of your project, the date on which your completed your project and your name.  The name of your project must include the name of the country you are introducing.).  Your project must contain at least 3 recipes that are typical of your country.  This is an individual activity; therefore, each student will present a project.  This project counts as the test for this unit and it is 100 points.  You will save your project in a manner that will allow us to view it in class.  If you are in doubt as to how to save your project, consult with one of our Media Center staff members.  I hope you are enjoying your four day weekend.  =0)

11/7:  Complete written exercises on a worksheet packet for the unit on food.  Play Scrabble and keep score(Participation grade, and bonus for winners.)  We will go back to the Media Center on Monday to complete PPoint project.  Be sure to save it to you U drive(the drive with your last name and first name initial on the label).  You can click on "file", "save as", then find your name on the drop menu and click on it; finally click on "save" at the bottom of the dialogue box).  You should be able to view your work from another Apple computer in the school. Take notes of what you want  to SAY and add for each slide of your presentation.  This project is 100 points.  

11/10:  Worked on PP in Media Center

11/11:  Veteran's Day; school is closed.

11/12:  Worked on PP in Media Center and in classroom on Mac laptops available. Started PP presentations.

11/13:  Reviewed food concepts on pages 154-157 of textbook.  Did Act. #21 for practice in notebook.

11/14: Finish presentations.  Introduction to holidays of the Hispanic world.  Watch film Dia de los Muertos en Janitzio. 

             100 word paragraph on paper provided in class(30 points).

THERE WILL BE ARTICLE REPORTS NEXT WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 19TH!  YOUR ARTICLE WILL BE ON THE COUNTRY ASSIGNED TO YOU AND MUST CONTAIN NEWS TAKING PLACE IN THAT COUNTRY.  In other words, if you find an article in an argentinian newspaper about USA events or sports, you will not be able to use it.

11/17:  Watch film on Central and South American holidays and wrote down "wow facts" about the rituals of different communities.

11/18:  Read article about Hispanic New Year's rituals for good luck, health, prosperity and love silently.  In groups of three, filled out a table showing differences and similarities to the USA culture; also, what students in groups do on New Year's Day that is different from Hispanic cultures.  Still in groups, wrote a five line(five words minimum in each) about the new year/old year.  The verse must rhyme and students will recite it from memory Thursday.

11/19:  Article reports today.

11/20:  Students recited their verses related to New Year celebrations in Hispanic countries using new vocabulary from article they read yesterday in class(25 points).  They read an article on New Year in Cuba and found synonyms to vocabulary words on yesterday's list; see New Vocabulary page of this web site.  Students were asked to bring the book of their choice to read in class tomorrow.  If magazine, it must be educational(Example: National Geographic, Psychology Today, Popular Mechanics, Popular Science, Smithonian, and Field & Stream).

11/21:  Students in first block watched Clara Perspectiva Episodes 4-7.  Second block watched Episodes 3-5, and third block watched episodes 3-6; then we read a book we brought from home.  There will be a quiz on Monday.  It will be a matching on vocabulary words learned this week(See New Vocabulary page of this site.). 

11/24:  Quiz on vocabulary related to New Year celebrations and movie Fiesta with questions from transparency.  Answered as they watched.

11/25: Copy words from transparency(related to Thanksgiving), practice word pronunciation(Repeat), use words in a 100 word composition about Thanksgiving plans, share the plans with a classmate, and create a Total Physical Response symbol for at least 5 concepts in the composition, practice in pairs: One student reads his composition and the other acts out what the first student reads.  Reverse roles using the second student’s composition, present in front of the class.

12/1:  Students learned about El Festival de Las Flores de Aibonito, Puerto Rico.  Answered questions related to the Festival.  You can find information online about the festival.  You must see me about questions if you missed them due to an absence.  Students copied information from the board that relates to this week's agenda.  There will be a test on Holidays this Friday and the contents of the test are listed on the board.

12/2:  Students read an article silently related to Carnaval de Ponce, Puerto Rico.  They watch a video (You can find the video entering "Carnaval de Ponce + Puerto Rico"  in Google.  There are short videos on YouTube and other information online.   Students also answered questions related to Carnaval de Ponce.  They also made up a 15 word rhyme(verse) about the songs people sing at this carnaval, such as "Toco, toco, toco, toco, vejigante toma coco.".  The given phrase counts as part of the 15 words required in the verse.  Students will do their oral news reports on their assigned countries tomorrow.
