1/29: Quiz Vocabulary Colleccion 1, pp6 and 7 of woorksheet packet, intro. to syllables and accent marks (textbook p18- Acento Tonico. No homework due tomorrow. No quiz tomorrow. Next quiz will be Friday on syllables and accent marks! AP students are required to write a 200 wd essay on the topic: El Mas Allla/Los Fenomenos Sobrematurales es/son producto de la imaginacion y no tiene/tienen validez. (The topic sentence will not appear in any part of the essay!).
1/30: We finished discussing, studying and practicing word intonation and accent rules on page 18, divided words into syllables on the board, and watch a silent movie Llamada de Larga Distancia(Students played the roles of the actors and created their own dialogues to go along with the movie.) There will be a quiz on syllables and accent marks this Friday!
1/31: Finished watching Llamada de Larga Distancia, broke into groups of three and wrote a 50 word paragraph to retell the story in words. Read the paragraph to the class and underlined words that are "llanas" with double line and "agudas" with two lines. Completed last page of activity packet and discussed. Practiced breaking words in syllables again, and classifying them into "llanas" and "agudas". Essays for AP students are due this Monday coming up!
2/1: Discussed last page of packet/answers to Acento Tonico exercises, took quiz on syllables and stress, and watched Episode 2 of the VideoNovela. AP students MUST submit their essays MONDAY, February 4th for 100 points. Students not meeting the deadline, can turn them in Tuesday for a maximum of 80 points(Refer to class syllabus).
2/4: Wrote an e-message to a friend and went over information on pages 20-21 of textbook, and gave back quizzes taken last Friday. Students learned about the parts of an informal letter. Quiz on Vocabulary page 21 is Wednesday, February 6th.
2/5: Practice writing narratives based on picture sequence from Colleccion 1, Listnened to reading selection on pages 23-25 of textbook, and took new practice packet home to complete top page front and back for tomorrow.
2/6: Completed up to page 12 of worksheet packet and took packet home to complete pages 13 and 14(homework!!!)- due tomorrow, discussed the Nota Cultural on page 27 of the textbook, and went over the uses and conjugations of verbs in the Present Progressive and Present Perfect. Spanish AP ONLY: Review conjugations of verbs in PRESENT SUBJUNCTIVE, PRETERIT, IMPERFECT, PRESENT PERFECT, PLUPERFECT, FUTURE, and FUTURE PERFECT from pages VC-1 to VC-7 of your textbook Conexiones. You must present one example of sentences in each tense/mode. You must write the personal pronoun (Yo, Tú, usted, etc.) along with the conjugated verbs to show subject-verb agreement(This assignment is due this Friday, February 8th!!!). Start reading page 75 of Conexiones, Human Rights Agreement(You will be asked to submit an example of a violation of each. This assignment will be due Monday, February 11!!!!).
2/8: Plans were left with a substitute teacher. Students wrote down two antonyms for each of these words: ocio, usual, aumentar, detestar, eficaz. They also read page 34 of the textbook and pages 36-38/In pairs, they answered questions under A and B of page 39; they turned in their answers to this exercise. They completed p15 of packet, read all info on pp 40-41, answered questions on page 16 of packet, and took homework home(to study all vocab. for 2nd half of chapter1, starting on page 21). You will have a vocabulary quiz tomorrow! Your chapter 1 test will be next Wednesday! See bulletin board in classroom(calendar)- AP students!!!, and check this web site periodically.
2/11: AP students turned in their third week assignments(from last week). All students worked on a formal letter(We passed a transparency from student to student and each student contributed a sentence.). All students also worked on all activities on page 45 of the textbook. Tomorrow we will work on page 46 activities, except Act. L which we worked on today(the formal letter to a homeowners' association president). Homework is to complete activities packet for Coleccion 1. Coleccion 1 test will be this Wednesday, February 13!!!

2/13: Test Coleccion 1 / You will have until tomorrow to turn in exercises from pages 45-46 of Nuevas Vistas and your completed packet for Asi Somos- Colleccion 1.
2/14: Went over meanings of voc. on page 50(New chapter!), pairs created dialogues using 8 words from the list on page 50, presented dialogues, and started reviewing the qualities of a good essay(Students were giving a sample copy of a medium-scoring essay- They will find the errors in that essay and highlight them tonight; this is HOMEWORK!)
2/15: went over errors in medium-scoring essay from yesterday, looked at a high-scoring essay and learn some skills for a well thought essay, read pages 52-55 of Nuevas Vistas in class and answered questions on page 56 orally, homework: write a 200 word essay using the elements of a well written essay about the topic in Sample 1 of the high-scoring essay sample. There will not be school on Monday. Have a nice and safe long weekend!
2/19: 5 min: students discussed story El Nacimiento de Veva, listened to story from CD, followed with acts. from the book orally on pages 56 and 57(act E was done in groups and students received 20 points for participating in it), and received new reading selection packet to be completed at home tonight! There will be a reading comprehension quiz this Thursday, and a vocabulary quiz on Monday! Re-read and study!!!
2/20: TOMORROW'S QUIZ POSTPONED UNTIL FRIDAY!!!Be ready to take it on Friday! The quiz is on El Nacimiento de Veva. Today we did oral exercises and from the CD using white boards to write our answers. We studied the Preterite and the Imperfect (pages 60 to 63 of the textbook), and completed the packet that was due today. The last page proved to be challenging for students but we completed it in class and students received 20 points. If you were absent today, you must bring your packet tomorrow to class; let me see it in order to post 20 points for you in the gradebook. Your homework is to STUDY for Friday's quiz and Monday's vocabulary quiz!
2/22: Students reviewed and took reading quiz for El Nacimiento
2/26: Took vocabulary quiz for La Ninez. Went over words on page 69 and wrote four line verse(5 words each line, at least) that rhyme A,B,A,B using the words ABSORTO(a), AMARGADO(a), DOLOR, and FRACTURADO somewhere in your verse. Come prepared tomorrow to recite your verse in front of the class from memory! =0)
2/21: Wrote a classmate's biography(200 wds.), and practiced listening with a CD and the listening complrehension workbook.

2/27: Recited verses from memory for 20 points, went over vocabulary words on electronic cards before reading the story Los Juegos de Lilus, read Los Juegos de Lilus pp 71-73 of textbook, then answered some questions on reading packet and will complete at home tonight(homework due tomorrow). Tangney's name and click on Spanish IV PIB. You will see the flashcards on the top section of your screen.
2/28: Completed and discussed reading packet in class(20 points) and role played a portion of the TZ episode Nightmare at 20,000 Feet. Homework: Study for quiz tomorrow on Los Juegos de Lilus. You must know what happened in the story and know meaning and function (including synonyms and antonyms) of all vocabulary words from the story.
2/29: Finished creating dialogues for Twilight Zone epsisode "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet. Took vocabulary and reading quiz for Los Juegos de Lilus. Discussed the Preterit and Imperfect in the same context, and the use of the Pluperfect. Took a worksheet home to complete for El Pasado Continuo and Preterito E Imperfecto en Contexto; this is due Monday. Your chapter2 test will be next Friday, next week!
3/3: Dialogue using all formal words in exercise F of page 77 of textbook(the ones after the slash); if you were absent and excused, you have been excused, but you are still responsible to know the use of each word shown in that exercise, went over exercise on page 79 of the textbook, and watch episode 3 of Contigo en La Distancia. Students also turned in their worksheet(homework over the weekend) for 20 points; you will have until Friday this week to turn it in if you were absent today.
3/4: Reviewed Past Progressive and Pluperfect tenses, p80 and 82 of book, read info on pages 88-89 of book and in groups, wrote a 100 wd paragraph to narrate life during the different periods of time in the history of Latin America starting with the discovery through today. Students put themselves in the shoes of someone who lived through all periods of time(fiction). In groups, they also prepared 10-20 index cards to practice the use of b/v and m/n- See page 90 for a review.
3/5: Finished and turned in spelling cards(b/v and m/n usage) and composition based on Datos Historicos part of chapter 2, worked in revolving circles with spelling cards, and started practice exercises on worksheets that are due tomorrow in class. CHAPTER 2 TEST IS STILL THIS FRIDAY!
3/6: Checked homework from yesterday (pages 31-34 on photocopies), went over answers, and started Repaso from pp 93 and 94 of the textbook(students required to finish at home and bring back tomorrow). 3/7: Students took test for Coleccion 2. No homework this weekend.
3/10: Students watched Mariposa and wrote 10 sentences related to the movie using these words(found on page 98 of your textbook): asequible, astronomo, con todo lujo de comodidades, entorpecer, excentrico, indignarse, incontable, estar al servicio, impulsar, a partir de. Also, it was announced in class today that students need to know ALL VOCABULARY words that appear on page 98 by Thursday. There will be a vocabulary quiz on those words Thursday!!! Study! Study! 3/11: Students wrote a 100 word paragraph using correct grammar and punctuation about what they will be doing 10 years from now.

3/13: Reviewed vocabulary on page 98 using electronic flashcards from School Notes. Read/listenend to text Rumbo al Futuro that starts on page 100 of your textbook. Took vocabulary quiz for Coleccion 3 (last 15 min. of class) for 20 points. No homework tonight.
3/14: Completed a crossword puzzle for vocabulary on Rumbo al Futuro, and created a one-minute skit in groups of three about an android or a "boceto"(sketch of a criminal). After presenting skits, AP students met with the AP coordinator to get information regarding the AP Spanish exam. AP assignments for this week are due MONDAY, 17 of March; not later!
3/17: Today students completed a worksheet related to the reading selection Rumbo Al Futuro in coleccion 3 of Nuevas Vistas textbook. They reviewed future and future perfect tenses found in Coleccion 3 also. Then, they broke into groups of three to build an android that specializes in a certain function(chosen by students). Wednesday each group must explain in Spanish step by step how to make their android work and how he/she will perform the task all in Spanish! NRT testing tomorrow, periods 1 and part of 2. Students will stay in homeroom until 11:00 am.
3/18: Students who came to class were given the priviledge to work on bonus questions from the textbook. All bonus questions must have been submitted by the end of the period TODAY. Bonus assignments will not be accepted tomorrow or later.
3/19: Finished building androids and presented information regarding the android each group created. Reveiewed the use of Conditional tense in Spanish, Reflexive Verbs, and Diphtongs/All found in Coleccion 3 of Nuevas Vistas textbook. Review vocabulary words on page 118 to get familiar with expressions used to talk about the environment.
3/20: Finished discussing all topics in Chapter 3. If you were absent, you will need to review information about diptongos and hiatos on page 116, vocabulary on page 119, read pages 121 to 125 and re-read if necessary, Commands on page 130 (affirmative and negative/Use the IMPERATIVE MOOD for affirmative commands, and SUBJUNCTIVE MOOD for negative commands.), Indirect and Direct Object Pronouns used in the same sentence on page 132, simple and compound sentences on page 134, read pages 140 and 141 and translate to English each paragraph if you want to earn 10 bonus points in class participation(THIS IS DUE ON MONDAY!- NOT LATER), review the "s" sound in Spanish and the use of s, c, and Z on page 142. Complete practice quizzes for chapters 1 and 2 (Substitute teacher will project answers for you after you so that you can see how you did.). Study Colecciones 1, 2, and 3 tonight and practice with electronic flashcards.
3/25: Mid-Term exam today
3/26: Bee movie today. No assignments were given.
3/27: Students translated vocabulary words on page 150 into English, chose 10 of those words and wrote original and miningful sentences, and a dialogue using the words.
3/28: Students read story on pages 152 and 153 of textbook Tiempo Libre after doing pre-reading activities on page 151. After that, students watch Lucy and the Monkey and wrote a summary/comparison paragraph for the two stories they learned about today in class, Tiempo Libre and Lucy and the Monkey. Students also worked on the AP workbook Practica 1(Short Dialogue).
3/31: Did activities on page 156 orally in class, completed a worksheet for vocabulary in context, and looked at an example of a word study(using a word root to map words from the same family) on a transparency, then sat in pairs and did their own word study for five different words. If you were absent, you need to pick up a worksheet and complete it. You also need to do a word study for five words of your choice.

4/1: AP students were given AP assignments above on hard copy. Students used the AP Prep book to practice listening to short narrative and answering questions, reading and answering questions, and paragraph completion with word roots provided. They completed Practica 1 Short Narrative 1-6, Reading Practica 1, 1, and Paragraph Completion 1, Practica 1. We will be in the Media Center tomorrow. Come by the classroom to see if you have first or second lunch.
4/2: Students worked in pairs in the Media Center to create a 10 slide PP presentation in Spanish. Each slide must contain 25 words of narrative in past tenses. Remember, in Spanish we narrate in the PAST! Each slide must contain pics. illustrating a scene. We will watch slide shows tomorrow in class. AP students worked on their third AP assignment for the week involving Power Point.
4/3: Worked on Power Point presentations during first and third lunches. Went back to class and started watching Selena, the movie.
4/4: Finished watching the movie Selena. AP students were given an extention on AP assignments due today. Assignments MUST BE turned 4/14/08; not later! Assignments submitted one day late will be penalized; scores will be lowered by 20% of the total value of the assignments.
4/14-4/18: Reviewed commands and received list of commands. Quiz next Wednesday, 23 of April(matching and fill in the blank for regular verbs).
4/21: Played BINGO with expressions containing commands. Reviewed voc. words that appear on page 167 with flash cards in revolving circles. Received worksheets to practice the subjunctive mode(Must turn in this Wednesday, April 23rd!). There will be a quiz on expressions containing commands and Imperative conjugations(regular) this Thursday!
4/22: We spent most of the block in the Media Center(some students only) working on PP presentations. Students completed their PP projects and saved them in their accounts. The use of the subjunctive mode was reviewed. Some students completed subjunctive packet and turned it in.
4/23: Students turned in their worsheets (packet pp 57 to 61) for Subjunctive practice. They reviewed vocabulary on page 167 of the textbook by writing a sentence with each word displayed on the board. We did not finish reading the story; we will continue reading tomorrow. There will be a quiz on commands tomorrow. Study list of commands given to you, as well as rules for conjugating verbs in the IMPERATIVE MODE.
4/24: Took quiz on commands. Read the rest of Chac Mool, and discussed with whole class.
4/25: Prepared and presented a one-minute skit to role play Chac Mool. Students were asked to change the ending of the story for their own ending. AP students worked on their exam prep-book activities- pages 63,64, 65, 66, and 67 to 70(Formal Writing drill).
4/28: We watched some power point presentations, reviewed vocab. words for Chac Mool, and copied words from the board that can be found in sentences in the subjunctive's main clause. There will be a Chac Mool Vocabulary quiz this Friday and a chapter 4 test next Friday.
4/29: P.182 Discussed Perfect Subjunctive(If you were absent, you need to get the information on Perfect Subjunctive from the textbook.), read about 5 de mayo and organized a reenactment of how 5 de mayo came to be a mexican-american celebration(from the historical perspective). We will reenact history of 5 de mayo Monday, May 5th, so students have to be ready to act their parts that day. They will not have time to rehearse their parts that day. That day, students will have the option to bring a home-prepared dish that is tradicional Mexican. If you work with a partner, you must bring in a couple of snap shots of you and your partner taking part in the preparation of the dish. Food preparation is for a maximum of 20 bonus points. Remember your dish MUST BE MEXICAN! Sp AP students had to look up information about fire arm laws and write a 200 word essay about "Los ciudadanos americanos no deben ser otorgados licensias para poseer armas de fuego.". The essay is due tomorrow Wednesday.
4/30: Reviewed some more for vocabulary quiz on Chac Mool, planned Cinco de Mayo skit, went over prepositions and adverbs that appear in chapter 4. Students wrote down English meanings, and we discussed their use. Spanish AP students went over practice exercises to prepare for the AP test next Tuesday, May 6th; they listened to some of the recordings used in the 2007 AP test. Students also received information packets with sample scripts that they must revise on their own.
5/1: Practiced vocabulary Chac Mool. Practiced for Monday's Cinco de Mayo skit. Students will get to rehearse one more time on Monday, 5th of May before performing skit. AP students completed paragraph completion exercises from the AP Prep book(without roots). They took the AP Prep book home to revise the following pages over the weekend: pp 91-96 for simulated conversation samples, and pp 186-216 for grammar. The AP exam is May 6 in the Teen Center. AP students MUST BE ON TIME at the test site.
5/2: Sp IV practiced for skit, AP did exercises from AP prep book, Paragraph completion(without root words).
5/5: Sp IV practiced skit while AP went over answers to paragraph completion exercises.
5/6: Refered to page 182 of Nuevas Vistas to write five examples of sentences in the Perfect Subjunctive, refered to page 186 to write five sentences using prepostions in Spanish, refered to page 187 to write examples of sentences using adverbs, and read about architecture of the Hispanic world from pages 192-193 of Nuevas Vistas. Students turned in written assignment at the end of the period. Chapter 4 test is this Friday. AP students took AP Exam in the Teen Center.
5/7: Went over the c, qu, and k to produce the |k| sound in Spanish- refer to page 194 of textbook, went over Architecture of Latin America- refer to pages 194-194 of Nuevas Vistas. Your chapter 4 test Friday!- No excuses, no delays, no extentions.
5/8: Students completed written Repaso on pages 197-198 of textbook (Parts A through K) and turned in for 50 points. We saw some Power Point Presentations; still working on them. Test Chapter tomorrow.
5/9: Reviewed chapter4, took chapter4 test, watch film on the Aztects and explained what it means to be a native american today.
5/12: Wrote story using voc on p 202 of book(words starting with each letter of ATREVIDO).
5/13: Reviewed vocabulary p 202 and sat in groups of three to translate parts of fragment from Como Agua Para Chocolate(turned in translations).
5/14: Read and went over translations of fragment of Como Agua Para Chocolate story. We will watch the movie tomorrow. Students also role played scenes from the story.
5/15: Watched Como Agua Para Chocolate. Wrote a small paragraph before watching film to make a prediction about the way the story ends. No quiz tomorrow!
5/16: Finished watching CAPChocolate and discussed familiy tranditions vs. forbidden love. Is it more important to follow your heart even if it breaks family tradition?/Played the rest of the movie in Spanish with English subtitles.
5/19: Students completed the following ideas and answered questions on pages 73-74 of the workbook. They also reviewed vocabulary for the story using flash cards.

5/21: Read story El Hijo on page 227 of Nuevas Vistas and translated and discussed the story orally. Went over activities on page 236 with the whole class. Nothing was collected from students today. Students must re-read the story at home, and go over the whole unit using the textbook to adequately prepare for chapter 5 test next Tuesday, May 27th!
5/22: Went over Nota Cultural about the Guarani language on page 235 of textbook. Presented a dialogue involving a parent and a child with a conflict, and discussed answers to exercises on page 237 of the textbook.
5/23: Watched Mi Pobre Angelito
5/27: Completed activities on pages 75-78 of workbook/discussed answers. Students must bring final exam study guide to class tomorrow. Chapter 5 test will be this Thursday, May 29th; it will consist of 25 multiple-choice questions. You must re-read the two stories in the chaper, and review all grammar and vocabulary.
5/28: Students presented concepts from study guide for final exam. Test chapter 5 tomorrow.
5/29: Students reviewed vocabulary from chapter 5 with flash cards. They took chapter 5 test, and continued presenting their concepts from study guide(They started yesterday, but did not finish.). Exam essay question will be answered in class tomorrow. It could by any A, B, or C from end of list on study guide. Be prepared! Be sure you use proper grammar, syntax, and spelling as well as answering the question thoroughly, accurately and logically.
5/30: Completed essay requirement of final exam. Worked on and completed bonus assignment in class(how to draw a "coqui" - for 5-10 bonus points). Multiple choice part of final exam Monday! Study using your study guide.
