Biology I Syllabus | |||||
Purpose: To provide exploratory experiences and laboratory and real-life applications in the biological sciences. | |||||
Major Concepts/Content: The content will include, but not be limited to, the following: o the nature of science o matter, energy, and chemical processes of life o cells: biology, reproduction, and communication o genetics: principles, molecular basis, diversity, and biotechnologies o levels of organization, classification, and taxonomy o structure, function, and reproduction of plants, animals, and microorganisms o behavior of organisms o interdependence of organisms, humans, and the environment o biological selection, adaptations, and changes through time o agricultural, food and medical technologies and careers
Grading System: Your class grade will be divided into the following components: Tests/Quizzes 30% Labs 20% Homework/Class work 25% Notebook 5% Exam (midterm/final) 20% *You are able to access your grade via Mrs. Schell’s website. You will need your student number as your password. | |||||
| Attendance: You are strongly encouraged to be in class on time every day. The material that you will be responsible for learning will be presented daily and if you are not present then you will need to make up your assignments independently. If it is necessary for you to miss class and it is excused then you may turn in make-up work within the same number of days you were absent. If a long-term assignment (when you have several days to complete the assignment) is due on the day of absence then it is due upon return. Credit will not be given for any make up work unless the absence is excused. Please see make up folder and assignment sheet for any make up work. If you have questions, ask a student who was present for the assignment. If you are still not clear, please see Mrs. Schell after class for further explanation. Make up tests will be given on Tuesday and Thursday immediately after school in room 2-211 unless other arrangements are made. | |||||
| Late work: Please be responsible in completing and turning in all assignments in a timely fashion. Late work is not acceptable. | |||||
| Tardy policy: Please make every effort to be on time to class. You are expected to be in your seat when the tardy bell rings. If you are not in class by the bell then you must sign in at the dean’s office. | |||||
| Plagiarism/Cheating: Plagiarism is a form of cheating by using someone’s work without giving the appropriate credit. Allowing another student to copy your work is also cheating. Copying someone else is not permitted. All forms of cheating will be punished to the fullest extent of the Code of Conduct. You will only learn if you do the work. | |||||
| Electronic devices/Cell phones: The use of electronic devices is prohibited. They are to be kept turned off and out of sight on school grounds. If such items are seen or heard then they will be confiscated. | |||||
| Dress Code: Dress code will be enforced. Please follow dress code as described in the Student Code of Conduct. | |||||
