Mrs. Merkel's Classroom Procedures
Classroom Discussions: Only one person speaks at a time. Raise your hand to speak. I will recognize individuals to speak. Respect the opinion of others.
Start of Class: Come into class quietly, turn in your homework, gather all required supplies, and begin the assignment on the screen. This is not time to socialize with others. The assignment is due 5 minutes after the start of class. We will then begin our daily quiz.
Heading Papers
Center of the Top Line: Title of Notes, Quiz, or Assignment
In the Top Right Corner (Right of the Red Line & Above the Blue Lines):
Name
Period
Date
Handing in Assignments: Hold your paper face down in your left hand. Your right hand should be ready to accept the paper(s) from your neighbor. Papers should be passed starting from the right side of the room. Hold onto your paper until you receive the paper(s) from your neighbor. I will collect the papers from those on the left of the classroom.
End of Class: The bell does not dismiss you. Stay in your seats until I dismiss you. We will work in class until the end of the period. I will let you know when it is time to pack up.
When I Want Your Attention: When you see &/or hear one of these cues: Hand Raised; Music Cues; “All Who Hear My Voice . . .”, stop your current activity, turn towards me, and wait for instructions. If you are in a group activity, be sure your other group members notice the signal.
Hall Passes: No passes will be given the first and last 15 minutes of class. Raise 2 fingers in the air. If appropriate at the time, I will fill out your hall pass request and give you the pass. Sign out on the clipboard by the door. Return the pass to me for confirmation and sign in at the door. Points will be given for not using all your passes. If an extra pass beyond the 3 for each marking period is required, you must accept a tardy.
Sharpening Your Pencil: Be sure to come to class with more than one sharpened pencil. Pencils will not be sharpened during discussions or direction-giving. Raise your pencil to signal me. I will signal permission, if appropriate at the time. Go straight to the sharpener and back without talking to others.
If You Are Tardy: Avoid being tardy to my class. Enter class quietly, turn in your homework, gather your materials, and join the current activity. Do not disturb the class. You must sign in on the Tardy Board and attach your pass to it. The Bellringer and quiz must be made up during the same class.
If You Miss a Class: Avoid missing my class. Notes and homework are available on the class website. You are responsible for ensuring that you are caught up on all assignments and have them turned in by the due date (or discuss this with me if you are unable to do so). Please ask if you are confused about the material. If you miss a test, you must set up a time to re-take it. It will be a different from the one given to the rest of the class (same difficulty level).
When We Have Visitors: Continue the current class activity – do not disturb class by talking to our visitor. If we were having a discussion or taking notes please use the time to review your notes. This is not the time to talk to others.
Other Interruptions: Listen to all announcements carefully. Do not use this time to talk.
If You Finish an Assignment Early: Work on another assignment for my class. Work on an assignment for one of your other classes. Do a logic, Sudoku, or cross-sum puzzle. Read a book. Boredom is not an option.
Storage of Personal Items: You should only have the materials currently being used on your desk. Everything else should be under your desk. Do not leave items in the walkway for safety reasons.
When We Have a Substitute: All our seating charts, expectations, and procedures are in effect. I will leave all that information for the substitute. Be respectful to the substitute – he/she is an employee of the county and deserves your respect. Assignments and quizzes count double. I will be asking for behavior reports.
