Flagler Palm Coast High School Swim Team Information
Practice Schedule
Monday through Friday 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday—8-10Parents are responsible for picking their swimmers up by 5:15 p.m. After a dual meet, swimmers will call home and provide their parents with a time for pick up. Swimmers will be picked up after dual meets from the high school in the back parking lot, by the 800 gym.
Absences
Attendance at practice is mandatory. Attendance at swim meets is also mandatory. If you are absent from school then you should not be at either practice or a meet. If you are absent from practice it must be due to illness, medical appointments or a family emergency. A note from your parent is required to excuse your absence. This note is due to either Coach Lovell or Coach Gillin on the day you return to practice. All absences, excused or not, will count towards the commitment criterion for lettering (see lettering guidelines listed below). Excessive unexcused absences from either practices or meets can result in your dismissal from the team. Three unexcused absences will disqualify you from swimming in the next meet. Four unexcused absences will disqualify you from swimming in the next two meets.Five unexcused absences will result in dismissal from the team. Many attendance issues will be dealt with on a case by case basis and will be dealt with individually. See Coach Gillin or Coach Lovell in these instances.
Tardies
Tardies will count against you. You must be on the deck ready to swim when the first set is announced. Any practice time you miss due to tardies, excused or not, must be made up. Excused tardies to practice can be due to an after school club or activity or medical appointment. These types of tardies must be accompanied by a note from your club or activity sponsor or from your parent for a medical appointment. Excessive tardies can result in your dismissal from the team. MISSING THE AFTER SCHOOL BUS TO PRACTICE IS NOT A LEGITIMATE EXCUSE FOR BEING TARDY OR MISSING PRACTICE.
On deck, locker room, bus and meet behavior guidelines
Swim team is a school sponsored and sanctioned activity. Swim team is merely an extension of your school day and all school rules apply even though you are not physically on FPC’s campus. In addition, you are representing not just yourself, but the entire FPC family. Failure to act appropriately will result in a referral but could also result in our inability, as a team, to fundraise. People do not want to put their support behind people who act inappropriately or who brag about it.
Any fines a swimmer incurs at a competition are their responsibility.
Overlapping sports
While overlapping sports should not be an issue, once you commit to the swim team you are to remain on the swim team. You should not and cannot quit the swim team to participate in another sport without jeopardizing your ability to participate in either. You will not be excused from swim practice to condition or try out for another sport. The coach for the other sport has to make alternate try out arrangements for you if you are participating with the swim team. Additionally, conditioning for another sport is not mandatory and cannot be made so according to rules put in place by the Florida High School Athletic Association.
Lettering Guidelines
Commitment—you must attend 90% of all regularly scheduled practices
You must attend all dual meets, the Five Star Conference meet and all other meets for which you qualify. If you are unable to swim in a meet due to injury or illness you must still accompany the team as a cheerleader or coaches’ helper.
Performance
Varsity letter—10 x 50 freestyle on the 1:00
First Varsity pin—5 x 100 freestyle on the 1:40
Second Varsity pin—3 x 200 freestyle on the 3:00
Third Varsity pin—6 x 100 freestyle on the 1:30
Fundraising--Because athletic teams must generate their own revenue, it is imperative that swimmers participate in the car wash. This entails selling all of their pre sale tickets as well as participating in the actual car wash. Swimmers need to contact either Coach Lovell or Coach Tom if you have any conflicting obligations that would prevent you from doing this. Failure to help the team fundraise can effect whether or not you receive your letter.
Sportsmanship—Failure to conduct yourself in a sportsmanlike manner can effect whether or not you receive your letter.
