Dear Parent or Guardian,
This year in Biology class your son or daughter will have many opportunities for learning, growth, and achievement. I will be monitoring your child's progress with the following grading policy.
Science Grading Policy
| Category | Percentage of final grade |
| Participation, Classwork, & Homework | 20% |
| Labs | 15% |
| Quizzes and Tests | 20% |
| Projects | 15% |
| Note book | 10% |
| Midterm/Final Exam | 20% |
| TOTAL | 100% |
Each of the above categories plays an important part in your child's learning.
Participation, Classwork, & Homework: Students are expected to be actively involved in the learning process. Participation will occur in many forms- warm up activities, class or small group discussions, reading and note taking strategies, and class activities. Classwork will be given regularly so that I may guide student learning. Students will also be assigned homework a few times per week. Homework may be a reading assignment, a worksheet, review questions, take-home activities, or unfinished class work. I encourage you to review homework on a regular basis so thatyou know how well your son or daughter is doing.
Labs: Students will be doing a number of exciting laboratory activities this year. I believe in hands on learning and look forward to sharing my vast laboratory experience with my students.
Quizzes and Tests: To ensure that students are regularly completing and understandingtheir course work, I usually administer one quiz per week. I assess student progress witha more formal test after completion of chapters or units. If your son or daughter earns a testgrade of C or lower, please encourage your child to visit with me about ways to improvehis or her progress. Make up opportunities will be available.
Projects: I anticipate assigning at least one project per grading period. Special projects arefun and challenging additions to your child's regular course work.
Note book: Students are required to keep a Biology note book. The purpose of the note book is to organize information given in class to use as a reference tool for exams. Please see the attached rubric for organizing your note book.
Late or Makeup Work: Late work will have a starting value of 50%. Please make sure that all work is turned in on time. If your child has an excused absence, please encourage him or her to visitwith me immediately upon returning to the classroom (or in advance if possible). Students have the amount of days absent to complete and turn in make up work before it becomes late.
No Name Papers: Papers without a student name will be assessed a 50% deduction once the paper is claimed. It is important that students properly head their papers.
Please know that it is my priority to ensure that each student has adequate assistance andample opportunity to succeed in this class.
