Course Description:

World History is a sophomore level social studies course at Flagler Palm Coast High School. It is a 1 credit, 18-week long course with classes meeting everyday for 90-minutes.  World History traces the origins and development of man and civilization from prehistoric times through the present. This course introduces students to the many varied cultures around the world that have influenced both civilizations and history. Finally, and most importantly, this course will attempt to teach critical thinking skills,communication skills (both verbal and written), research skills (including internet), and an appreciation for current events to the students. *Students and parents will be able to access current grades via www.mygradebook.com. Students will be able to view their personal grades, missing assignments, access to the class Power Point notes, as well as access to the entire text book: World History: Patterns and Interactions. From this site students can print and download any information that they may possibly need for the class.    

Objectives:

Ø       The student will trace the emergence of modern humans

Ø       The student will understand the origins of civilizations.

Ø       The student understands historical chronology and historical perspective.

Ø       The student will describe the impact of geography on civilizations.

Ø       The student understands the world from its beginnings to the time of the renaissance

Ø       The student understands Western and Eastern civilization since the Renaissance.

Ø       The student will understand the world in spatial terms.

Ø       The student will understand the interactions of people and the physical environment.

Ø       The student will develop and define his or her own political beliefs or tendencies.  

Grading/Evaluation:

Class Work/Notebook/Portfolio:                         20%  (To include: class work, vocabulary, journal, newspaper articles)

Daily Grade/Participation: (CNN, quizzes, PPT notes)       20%

9-Weeks Exam/Final Exam (Cumulative):            20%

Research Paper(s)/Media Center Research:         10%
