Course objectives:
The purpose of this course will be to develop and strengthen the students' writing, reading, and communication skills through the study of Poetry, Fiction (Short Stories and Novels), Non Fiction, and Drama.
FOR THEIR WRITING SKILLS, THE STUDENTS WILL:
· Learn Pre-writing strategies
· Write fluently for occasion, audience, and purpose
· Revise writing drafts, edit final documents
· Write sentences
· Write Narrative, Persuasive, and Expository Paragraphs.
· Write Essays
· Write a Research Paper
· Use new vocabulary words through the manipulation of root words
FOR THEIR READING AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS, THE STUDENTS WILL:
- Read, discuss, and write about Short Stories, Poetry, Novels and Plays
- Learn reading strategies
- Learn cultural and historical literature
- Use effective vocabulary (from the literature), critical thinking, and study skills
- Develop fluency and appreciation of reading through independent selection of materials
- Use all of the cueing systems (graphic, syntactic, semantic and pragmatic) in context to gain meaning from text or non-print media
- Use speaking, listening, and viewing skills to enhance the reading process
Materials Needed
- FPCHS provides:Apple laptop computer, resources of classroom library and school Media Center,reading lists, handouts, and classroom texts
- Student provides: 3 ring binder, paper, dividers, pen(cil)s
Tips for success:
- Be in class (you cannot learn if you are not in class…each day equals two class periods)
- Be on time (you should be seated and ready to work when the bell rings)
- Be prepared (bring the above mentioned materials every day)
- Be nice (show respect to your teacher and fellow students)
- Read-read-read-read, Write-write-write, write!
Typical class schedule:
- Grammar drills (15 minutes)
- Vocabulary work (15 minutes)
- Writing Strategies or Literature discussion (30minutes)
- USSR (Uninterrupted Sustained Silent Reading) period (20minutes)
Grading:
You will be given about 3 grades per week (about 30 per 9 weeks). Please read the student handbook concerning makeup work. It is the student’s responsibility to contact the teacher about makeup work. Note: when you are unexcused absent for a grade, you will receive a zero on that grade. When you receive an excuse for that absence, you will be allowed to make up that missed grade. Mini Report Cards will be sent home every three weeks to be signed by the student’s parent/guardian as a 10 point assignment
Grade distribution- A=100 to 90 B=89 to 80 C=79 to 70 D=69 to 60 F=below 60
