We use Language! as a comprehensive curriculum that covers the critical areas of language development, including:    Phonemic Awareness and Phonics, Word Recognition and Spelling, Vocabulary and Morphology, Grammar and Usage, Listening and Reading Comprehension and Speaking and Writing. 

This program infuses an abundance of graphic organizers, cultivates background knowledge and creates more independent learners. 

Each Unit has ten Lessons, which introduce and then reinforce skills.

 

The focus here is skill mastery, not completing lessons within a particular timeframe. 

Unit 10, Lessons 1-10

 Phonemic Awareness and Phonics-

  • Say the long vowel sound for each vowel: a, e, i, o, u.
  • Write the letter patterns to represent teh long vowel sound for a_e, e_e, i_e, o_e, u_e.
  • Identify syllables in spoken words.

 Word Recogniton and Spelling-

  • Read and spell words with sound-spelling correspondences from this and previous units.
  • Read and spell the Essential Words: almost, alone, already, also, although, always.
  • Read and spell contractions with: will

 Vocabulary and Morphology-

  • Define Unit Vocabulary words.
  • Identify and generate synonyms, antonyms, and homophones for Unit Vocabulary.
  • Add -s to verbs to signal third person singular, present tense; -ed for past tense; and -ing to signal present progressive.
 Listenting and Reading Comprehension-
  • Read fluently with inflection, phrasing, and expression.
  • Identify time sequence organization in informational text.
  • Select context clues from informational text.

 

 Grammar and Usage-
  • Identify future tense verb phrases.
  • Identify compound sentences.

 

 Speaking and Writing-

  • Generate sentences that present facts (statements).
  • Write a time sequence paragraph using transition words.
  • Answer Understand It questions beginning with paraphrase, summarize,  and identify.
  • Record information on a graphic organizer.
