Contact information:  email: hassingertheresa@flagler.k12.fl.us                                          Phone: 446-6700

Classroom Goals:  Students will improve various artistic skills and learn new skills through use of many media to include paint, marker, crayons, ink, collage recycled sculpture materials. Students will also gain knowledge and understanding of other cultures/peoples around the world.

Guidelines for success include coming to class prepared and working hard inside of class and outside of class.  Many opportunities to be successful will be given to each student in the forms of projects, drawings, and assignments that encourage better understandings of various world cultures.

Classroom Rules:1)     Sit in assigned seat or at assigned table.2)     Raise your hand before speaking. Use “inside” voices.3)     Keep hands, feet, and all objects to yourself.4)     You must be in your seat before you are dismissed.

Activities- A sample week’s activities will include “Do Nows”, reading, drawing /planning, brainstorming, working on projects, quizzes/tests, and any housekeeping activities associated with art materials.

Proposed schedule of projects:  1) Create a Portfolio for work storage                                                              2 Create a personal sketchbook                                                              3) Principles and Elements of Design      4) Art of Latin America- Amate Painting -

Materials- We’ll be using a lot of recycled materials in the art class. I ask

for parents to send in whatever they can. Things we’ll be needing are styrafoam egg cartons and food trays, corrugated cardboard pieces, 2 liter beverage bottles, tin cans, plastic containers from margarine or deli takeout, and old magazines.  I’m also asking that parents send in an old shirt with their students for painting days. Be sure that the shirt is something that can be ruined. This item will be stored in the classroom. Student name and period will be put on the shirt in marker. This really takes some of the stress of being in the art room away for the students.  Accidents happen, paint is a liquid medium!

Grades

Grading Scale:  90-100=A, 80 –89=B, 70-79=C, 60-69=D, 59 and below=F. I grade using a percentage of the total points available.

Classroom Procedures:1)     Be prepared. Be on time! Enter the room quietly!2)     Students are considered tardy if you are not in your seat at class start time. Tardies will contribute to a four- step referral.3)     Students need your own pencil everyday in class. Sharpen pencils before class begins If you don not have a pencil with you, you will be considered “unprepared for class.” Consequences for being unprepared for class will contribute to a four -step referral, too.4)     Daily assignments will be written on the board in the front of our classroom. Long- range assignments will be updated daily on the agenda. Due dates for assignments will be posted on the front board. 5)     This procedure has been updated 9/21/07. BE sure you have your first and last name and period on the BACK of the assignment.6)     Color-coded supplies will be on your tables when you enter the classroom. If supplies need to be replenished, Mrs. Hassinger will do this. Raise your hand and let me know what you need.7)     Student work will be in your possession at all times. I will display outstanding work in our classroom for a brief period of time. KEEP ALL GRADED WORK IN YOUR PORTFOLIO. It will not be stored long-term.8)     When a student returns from an absence, speak to me to find out what you have missed. You will have the number of days absent to make up any work. If you miss a test, make arrangements with me to make it up. Do not expect to take the same test as everyone else did. You will take a different version of the test/quiz.

Late/Missing/ Incomplete Assignments

1)     Late assignments will be accepted up to one week after the due date. 2)     Missing assignments will receive a zero.3)     Incomplete assignments will receive points for the parts that are turned in to me. It is always better to turn in what you have than to take a zero for missing a whole project.

Communication with Parents/Families

I will send out email bulletins to parents/families bi-weekly to let you know what we are working on, any recycled materials we are collecting, and a general sense of how things are going by period. If you would like to receive a group email from me please just write your email address on the tear off sheet with your signature.Families-If you need to speak with me. Please use the contact information at the front of the syllabus.

End of class

Students will be dismissed when they are seated at quiet, clean tables at the end of class. I will not write passes for those who may choose to dawdle over cleaning up.

Consequences for classroom rule violations

Violations of classroom rules that involve a safety issue of any kind will result in an automatic referral to the discipline office.  Physical contact would be considered a safety issue as would misuse of any art materials. Minor rule infractions like tardies, gum, minor misbehavior or being unprepared for class will result in a four- step referral for any combination of these infractions. Four step referrals work like this: First infraction= verbal warning to student phone call home, Second infraction: Letter comes home from me, Third infraction=phone call home and Fourth infraction the referral is written and sent to the office.

Rewards for good behavior:1)     Trip to the junk trunk filled with assorted goodies.2)     Free Paint Friday.3)     Donuts for morning classes! Snacks for after lunch classes!4)     Pizza party for lunch for the class.

Consequences for school board code of conduct violations

My job requires me to follow through with disciplinary referrals for violations of district wide rules including dress code, unexcused absences, threats, bullying, vandalism, stealing, etc.--------------------------------------------------------------------cut here----------------------------
