***Read with your child***
Reading with your children is a very rewarding experience and a wonderful opportunity to stimulate speech/language development in the preschool and early elementary school years. Reading with your child develops vocabulary, provides an opportunity to practice correct sounds, and can nurture a life-long love of reading.
Rhyming books are wonderful for developing early literacy skills, auditory processing skills, and sound awareness.
Make reading a special part of the day. Take turns with your children in selecting what to read. Develop conversation skills and higher level thinking skills by discussing character's behaviors and reactions. Make preditions and ask questions. Encourage your child to ask you questions. Discuss how stories relate to events in your children's lives.
In our busy lives it is difficult to find the time to read with your children. You will find that it is a very rewarding experience for you and your children. This time can be invaluable for children with special needs.
