 Speech & Language

Welcome to my Speech & Language Therapy website.  My name is Mrs. Carolyn Stier.  I achieved both my Bachelor's & Master's Degrees in Communicative Disorders from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 1980 & 1982.  I have made Palm Coast, FL my home for 10 years now.

As our students go through their school years, expressive and receptive language skills are critical for academic growth.  The student's skills in understanding what is being spoken to them (receptive language) as well as the ability to convey their thoughts both verbally and in writing (expressive language), are skills critical to their academic sucess. Speech intelligibility (sounds) are just as important for listener understanding.  The more a child reads, speaks, and writes the easier it becomes for them to do well in understanding their classroom work and how to express themselves socially with their peers and adults. Encouraging your child to communicate with you by commenting, questioning, naming, noticing, all the potential things to talk about in his/her enviroment, is by far the best approach towards creating a successful learner.

My students never fail to put a smile on my face every day when they share their thoughts.  How they express their perceptions of the world around them is truly a joy to listen to.  Take time to listen to a child, it's amazing what they can teach you.

Kids, remember to read as much as you can over the summer. The more you read, the more you have knowledge power!

Parents:

If you want to have some speech and language activities to work on over the summer, please review my website where there are several ideas that can get you started and may use for carryover.  Thank you for your continued support.

Please don't hesitate to call or e-mail me, if you have any questions or concerns.

Have a safe and enjoyable summer!  I look forward to the 2008-2009 school year in providing speech & language services for my students in our newly built addition.
