This week's ROBUST vocabulary
12/1/08
Please make sure you are using this vocabulary as much as possible. The words are difficult but the more students are exposed, the better they understand them. Remember, these words don't go away each week, they return on later tests.

1.Tugged- If you tugged something, you pulled it hard. 
2. Paused- If you paused, you stopped what you were doing for a moment.
3. Scavenger- An animal is a scavenger if it collects leftover and unwanted objects.
4. Self-sufficient- If something is self-sufficient, it makes everything it needs.
5. Columns- A column is a tall, circular structure that holds up part of a building.
6. Absorb- Something absorbs a liquid if it soaks up the liquid.
7. Protects- When you protect something, you keep it safe.
8. Rustling- When light objects are rustling, they are moving and making a soft, crackling sound.
9. Dissolve- When something dissolves, it mixes completely with a liquid.
10. Particles- Tiny pieces of something are called particles.

1.Dechipered-If you have figured out a message that is difficult to understand or that's wirtten in code, then you have deciphered it.
2. Mistaken- If you are wrong about something, you are mistaken.
3. Catastrophe- A catastrophe is something really terrible that has happened.
4. fortunate- If you are fortunate, you are very lucky. 5. translate- If you translate something, you say or write it in another language.
6. Repairs- When something needs repairs, it needs to be fixed.
7. Heaving- Heaving means throwing something heavy with great effort.
8. Bothersome- When something is bothersome, it bothers you and causes problems.
9. Din- If there is a din, there is so much noise that it is hard to hear anything over it.
10. Dodging- When you are dodging something, you avoid something that is coming toward you.

1. Swooned - If you had a terrible shock or surprise that made you feel fain or fall, you might have swooned.
2. astonished - When you are amazed and surprised by something, you are astonished.
3. envious - If you feel envious, you want something that someone else has.
4. rivalry - People who have a rivalry are competing against each other for something.
5. encouraging - Something that is encouraging gives someone hope or confidence.
6. brief - If something is brief, it does not take much time.
7. chuckling - If you are cuckling, you are laughing quietly to yourself.
8. soothing- Something that is soothing makes you feel calm.
9. sobbed - Someone who sobbed cried very hard.
10. praised - If you have praised someone, you have told that person that he or she did something well.
