The purpose of this program is to prepare students for employment or advanced training in the heating, air-conditioning (A/C), and refrigeration industry. The program prepares students for employment as Heating, A/C, and Refrigeration Helper, Heating, A/C, and Refrigeration Mechanic Assistant, Heating, A/C, and Refrigeration Mechanic, and Commercial A/C Technician.
The program demonstrates elements of the industry such as:
- Occupational safety
- Basic occupational math
- Use and maintenance of tools, gauges and instruments
- Working knowledge of fluids, pressures, and refrigerants
- Fabricate and service piping, tubing and fittings
- Air-Conditioning and refrigeration components
- Basic electricity for A/C and refrigeration
- Troubleshoot A/C and refrigeration electrical controls
- Installation of residential heating and A/C systems
- Residential heating and A/C systems start-up procedures
- Utilize and operate mechanical refrigeration service and testing equipment
- Communication and computer skills
- Understanding of entrepreneurship
- Demonstrate employability skills
The length of the program is 450 classroom hours and 6,000 on-the-job training hours (3 years of apprenticeship).
